In 1996, the brewery innovates and launches Barbăr, ale with honey.
Born of the ancestral know-how of a family brewery, Barbar beer will please you with its malt taste and subtle flavour of honey. It is brewed using water drawn from artesian wells on the site of the brewery, at Quenast, a small village to the south of Brussels. This area is well-known for the quality and the diversity of its beers.
Barbar beer is prepared from a secret and harmonious mixture of barley malts, hops and honey carefully selected by our Master Brewer. The traditional brewing method, associated with our unique strain of yeast, and the secondary fermentation in the bottle, gives Barbar the authentic flavour of a very special ale.

Bottle, 330 ml. Pours relatively clear amber with lots of soapy white head. Lots of sweet malts and cereal notes on the nose, with some measure of coriander (reminiscent of Hoegaarden), some floral characteristics and of course some honey, though the latter isn’t as prominent as expect. Honey however becomes by far the dominant note in the taste, backed up by bready, strongly yeasty undertones and a spicy edge. No detectable alcoholic taste but a nice warmth regardless. Little bit watery initially but a rather dry finish with cereal in the aftertaste. Easygoing on the palate with not nearly as much carbonation as expected from the head, a smooth texture and decent medium body complimenting this. Overall a bit one dimensional and will perhaps be too sweet for some, but I like it regardless.

Hij reukt ten eerste al heel goed heel zoet maar het mooie is dat hij niet te zoet smaakt en daardoor is hij echt een van de betetere biertjes die ik heb gedronken heb

Bottle 330ml. Pours clear medium-light golden-brown color. Head is short, foamy and white. Aroma is sweet with dried fruits, prunes, strong honey, caramel, yeast and slight alcohol. Mouth feel is light and creamy, with a silky texture and soft carbonation. Pleasantly tickling with notable alcohol tang. Very crisp and surprisingly easy to drink. Taste mostly of honey, very sweet and almost no bitterness. Honey flavor is very floral and fresh, and is really front-stage. Tastes of savory spices. Very weak sourness when going down the throat with notes of tropical fruits and passion fruit. Background roasted and dark malt notes. Alcohol is very present but not assertive nor unpleasant, somewhat sweet alcohol. Some weak ethanol off-flavors. Ends sweet but not sticky. After taste is pleasant, lightly sweet, caramel, not sticky. A good sipping beer, not at all boring and yet very crisp and easy to drink. Quite light, but the alcohol is felt. It’s a little to the sweet side, and the honey is slightly to upfront, somewhat abstracting the other flavors. Good dessert beer.
