UPDATED: MAR 26, 2011 Ahh, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. My wife and I went on one of our first dates at Bardo back in 1997. Only weeks before that, however, that’s where I watched my Jayhawks take a beat down from Arizona, the eventual tournament winner. I was devastated. I also vaguely remember drinking beer there. This one, though, I remember quite well. Partially because the name was so damn brilliant. Partially because the beer was gloriously delicious the first time I had it. Partially because when I went back for the next batch it was so disgustingly awful. I guess that’s what happens when you play with wild yeast -- sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, particularly when the people involved probably had no idea what they were doing. The first batch -- the delicious one -- was a God’s-honest-truth lambic: earthy, complex, yeasty, tart. And with just the right amount of fruit. The second time, well, who knows what they had done. It basically tasted like alcoholic Kool-Aid -- no tasty, tarty funk, just sweet fake fruit. Maybe this is why Bardo didn’t make it? Seemed like they had some serious quality control issues. My ratings are for the good version. That’s how I want to remember Marion Berry.

It seems as if they had trouble with this one. The beer was almost like an 'ade'. Too fruity with no other flavors detected. It smelled kind of nice though.
