3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
(Old BA rate - bottle)
Pours with a nice finger of lightly tan head that has some bubbliness about it and holds fairly well on a deep, dark cola brown hue. Not great lacing, though.
Aroma is really packed with lots of fruits: passion fruits, plums, prunes, all really nice. Some hop bitterness comes into play, but really leans to an English take on the style. Aroma also has notes of caramel and toffee. Flavor is decidedly less sweet than led on by the aroma, but this is a good thing for me. Still lots of fruitiness in the taste, but more on the prune-side. Nice bit of a hop kiss mid-taste; then toffee and even a coffee note sneeks in. Really lots of nice flavors, and well-balanced and enjoyable. MF is medium, with subtle, soft carbonation. Really nice sipping brew and warming, and my only complaint is that the hop profile would need to be amped up a little to make it a US Barleywine. Nonetheless, it’s definitely a nice one in general. Good brew.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml bottle from a touristy food and wine souvenir shop in Pula, Sardinia. Great aroma, tastes of chocolate, prunes, think I noticed the grapes in the aroma, but maybe wishful thinking. Nice carbonation, nice head, felt the alcohol was well hidden, I would buy it again for sure (although for 17€ it’d have to be a special occasion).

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Smith’s. Pours turbid dark brown/burny umber with 2-finger clingy tan head. Nose is cacao, prune, plum, dark patent malt, blackberry, port, merlot. Tastes dark malty, with cacao, blackberry, some tartness, some late lactic notes, and tons of complexity. This one evolved as it warmed, and was enjoyable from beginning to end.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
37.5cl bottle, Riserva 2008. Pours a dark amber body with a nice creamy and frothy light brown head that had very nice retention. Thick intense maltiness to the nose but there’s a touch of resiny hops sticking around as well. Some noticeable alcohol, and a subtle vinous quality. The flavor is quite a mix, something between an English Barley Wine and a Port almost. Thick caramel and toffee maltiness up front but the sweet vinous/grape qualities dominate on the finish with a touch of alcohol. Mouthfeel is fairly thick, but for all the sweetness there really isn’t a whole lot of stickiness to it. Nice soft carbonation. The high alcohol seems to cut down on the thickness as well. A very interesting beer for sure, the Italians don’t always come up with the best ideas, but they seem to keep coming up with ideas at least. I enjoyed this for the uniqueness as much as for the flavor.
