Poured with a nice foamy frothy thick tan head and some lace. Color is a very dark brown with red higlights.Aroma is a heady mix of malt fruit yeast fortified wine and chocolate. Flavor’s the same way, but with a lot more of everything. Quite sweet. Sipping beer for sure. Body is heavenly and has perfect carbonation for this style. Be nice to try with a good cigar. Sweet boozy finish. Sipping beer with your smoking jacket on. hahahah hell ya

750mL courtesy of Travlr. Pours a muddy, deep brown with no head. Some speckles of off-white lace. Nose is caramel, toffee, fennel. Taste is rye bread, toast, dark/unsweetened chocolate. No grapes or orange peel :( Pretty mediocre.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DocLock (6800) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 29, 2010
Bottle from Smith’s. Pours turbid dark brown/burny umber with 2-finger clingy tan head. Nose is cacao, prune, plum, dark patent malt, blackberry, port, merlot. Tastes dark malty, with cacao, blackberry, some tartness, some late lactic notes, and tons of complexity. This one evolved as it warmed, and was enjoyable from beginning to end.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 kramer (3880) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 8, 2010
37.5cl bottle, Riserva 2008. Pours a dark amber body with a nice creamy and frothy light brown head that had very nice retention. Thick intense maltiness to the nose but there’s a touch of resiny hops sticking around as well. Some noticeable alcohol, and a subtle vinous quality. The flavor is quite a mix, something between an English Barley Wine and a Port almost. Thick caramel and toffee maltiness up front but the sweet vinous/grape qualities dominate on the finish with a touch of alcohol. Mouthfeel is fairly thick, but for all the sweetness there really isn’t a whole lot of stickiness to it. Nice soft carbonation. The high alcohol seems to cut down on the thickness as well. A very interesting beer for sure, the Italians don’t always come up with the best ideas, but they seem to keep coming up with ideas at least. I enjoyed this for the uniqueness as much as for the flavor.

750ml bottle (Bir & Fud, Roma) - shared by Alejandro - a million thanks!
Black, and a tan head. Very rich roasty aroma. Beautifully soft palate. Burnt but mellow finish, with a hint of liquorice. Some marmite too there. The finish is superb - a toasty roasty maltiness, and a long dry finish. I’m not getting the 40% grape, but by heck and I getting malt, malt, roasty roasty malt. Stunner!

21st December 2008. Cloudy dark brown beer. A slightly odd brew. Feels like somewhere between a porter and a stout but dry and with an undertone and finish of something sweet. The head is quite grapey. The alcohol is warming. Different!
