On draught at Green Dragon for Black Friday. A nice citrus hop flavor with the dark notes that balance it out. Overall, really good.

Super danky and toasty nutty nose. Smells like a nug of weed. Dark brown pour thin head nice lace. Flavors of chewy dank roast dark malt dryness, oily bitterness finish. Solid.

Bottle at Alibi Room, Vancouver, courtesy of Gerry
Black color. Intense aroma, roasted malts, chocolate, fruity hops. Full bodied, coffee and roasted malt flavor, a bit ashy, with light residual sweetness, followed by extreme resiny hopping. Still some harsh roastiness in the final, but it doesn’t spoil the rest.
Powerful.

Draught @ APEX, Portland, OR

Pours pitch black with a foamy white head. Aroma of roasty malts, grassy hops, nuts, citrus and lemon. Taste is smooth, roasty and hoppy with notes of grass, citrus and nuts. Finish is roasty, grassy and bitter with some nutty notes. Quite stoaty for a black IPA.

UPDATED: MAY 31, 2014 Nice goblet on tap tonight at Bittercreek.. Black brew only reveals crystal clear garnet highlites when held to a nearby bulb... long lasting lite tan head with good lacing. Fruity citrus hoppiness with some background lite roast coffee.. hints of cocoa. Flavor mirrors the nose with a pronounced bitterness... more citrus hops than the aroma... and again some nice albeit minor roasty elements... great body.

Draft at apex. Dark brown pour, loads of lacing. Aroma: dank, pine, and cat pee/litter box. Taste: nicely balanced, with great pine, hop bitter finish. Some chocolate there, but subdued - leans more toward the ipa side than the darker side here, but delicious nonetheless - think wookey jack. Medium body. Pretty drinkable, even given the 7.8% abv.

Glass at APEX. Pours a pure black color with a medium light beige head. The aroma is big chocolate and pine. The flavor is fruity hops, pine, deep roast. Very balanced overall, leaning toward hops. Good.

On tap at Apex, pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma brings out more fruity notes than roasted malt, with a touch of hops detectable. Flavour brings out smooth dry roasted malts upfront, balanced by just enough hops to give it a slightly bitter profile and balance out the malt. Highly drinkable and well-crafted. Excellent stuff.

This beer calls itself a CDA (Cascadian Dark Ale). This, of course, is the same thing as a Black IPA, except it uses specifically Cascadian Hops, from the Pacific NW. It is very strong, in aroma, flavor, and body.
