This altbier was the 2009 Indiana Replicale that we aged in a Buffalo Trace Distillery Bourbon Barrel. The barrel had already had beer in it twice so the third time you don’t get bourbon flavor but rather more oak, wood and vanillin flavors. Wanted to see how a lighter beer would do in the barrels. 5.0% ABV, 32 IBU.

Tasted 8/11/10. Sampler from the Brewpub. Hazy with a dark amber hue. Brainy and ring of off-white head. Woody and earthy aromatic notes. Undertones of vanilla. Medium bodied and somewhat unblended. The base altbier is nice but it is completely overwhelmed by the bourbon barrel flavor. Earthy and spicy flavors with the vanilla oakiness taking the front seat as far as flavor goes. Nice to try, but this was overpowering and overt.
