COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black IPA is a new trendy beer style among craft brewers. Our twist on this style was to use our Belgian yeast and add Belgian candi sugar, thus making a bigger (ABV) beer. Name is a play on Jean Claude Van-Damme - late 80’s / early 90’s kickboxer turned action star - remember Bloodsport? His nickname is "The Muscles From Brussels". So we developed a kick-ass Belgian-style, big, strong, hoppy beer! Malt Profile: Standard 2-Row, Munich, Cara-Pils, Chocolate, Black Patent, Flaked Barley, Belgian Candi Sugar, Brewer’s Crystals. Intentionally did NOT add roasted barley since we wanted the bitterness to come from the hops, not from the addition of dark grains. Hop Profile: Features Amarillo & Citra. Also contains Saaz and East Kent Goldings in the flavor. Citra is a new hop that has a fruity aroma and flavor - grapefruit/lime/melon. Amarillo is well known - has a distinct citrus/orange flavor. Dry-hopped with Citra & Amarillo which enhances the aroma. This was an 8bbl test batch available only at Barley Island, 10.2%, 80 IBU’s

On tap at Barley island in BR. Nose is full of hops with noticable sweetness. Pours dark brown with a pale and fading head. Has the initial bite of an ipa but immediately mellows out in to a smooth cream like taste and feel. Very nice and quite different.

Served the first glass at the broad ripple location in a goblet. The appearance is very deep/muddy brown. Think murky muddy waters. Much more brown than black but clearly darker than an IPA with alot of "stuff" going on in it and NO opacity to be found. Slight fading white head that leaves decent lacing. The initial aroma is mostly sweet citrus hops with faint sugar. The flavor is very smooth and sweet. Citrus and juicy fruit hops come through as well as dark malt and chocolate. The smoothness adds a nice milk chocolate accent that rounds this out nicely. The finish stays sweet and reminds me of a hopped up orange creamsicle with an alcohol punch. By far the most impressive offering I’ve had at B.I. to date. Get it while you can!
