On draught during the Autumn Brew Review 2009 in Minneapolis, MN. Pours a hazy brown colored barley wine with a thin beige ring that quickly disappears. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, some raisin, a touch of cherry and toffee. Taste is full bodied, very little carbonation with flavors of a tawny port, bourbon, a hint of cherry and vanilla. Finish is quite sweet with some bourbon, brown sugar, apple and vanilla aftertaste.

Growler, courtesy of yespr. An oily pour leaves a dark copper beer under an minimal off-white head. Alcohol, dried fruits and perfume on the nose, vinous bordering boozy. Sweet flavor with alcohol and raisins, some caramel as a background. Warming, full-bodied and rather flat. Throat-burning finish that lasts for a good while. A big beer that isn’t much suited for drinking, it’s a sipper. Way to hot, but still nice. 091024

A Mes rate. Bottle at Borefts 10am day after hotel tasting. Slightly murky dark brown with a very short lived head, in fact I think the only thing that kept it up is the viscosity. The commercial description uses the word ’subtle’ twice. I found nothing subtle about it at all. In fact, no, that’s a lie, there are some subtle beer like qualities to it... Basically it’s all heat and raw bourbon to me. Spirit concentrate. All booze and no trousers.

I enjoyed the Wild Brunette enough to sway my decision on dropping the $9 for 5.5oz pour here... Pours a cloudy brownish amber with a finger of creamy beige head. Lots of sherry in the nose, some fruity and sweet notes to. Faint bourbon, compared to the sherry, hints of apple and vinous. The taste is heavily influenced by the barrel aging, it’s hard to believe that this is a third cycle through these barrels... Vinous, more sherry, bourbon, and caramel. Lots of barrel notes. Good, but the overwhelming sherry/bourbon presence puts a glass ceiling in place.

Handbottled, 14%. Quite alcoholic aroma, a bit of mild paint thinner. Clear dark brown colour, red shine. No head. The flavour is quite sweet, has a lot of alcohol. Vinous, some paint thinner, vanilla. Has some good elements, but why so much alcohol?
