Tap at the brewpub. Very solid Doppelbock - slightly hazy amber pour with a sticky head. Sweet caramel dominates, with some dark fruit and yeast. Yummy brew.
1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 otakuden (1616) - Vero Beach, Alabama, USA - NOV 15, 2010
Appearance: burnt amber and burnished mahogany. Little head though decent khaki collar. Swirls with no real improvement in head, lace, or collar.
Nose: mild for a doppelbock. Gentle sweetness with melba toast underneath and more melba in the back. Not much of anything else. No caramelized sweetness.
Palate: mildly sweet with red apples and a watery mouthfeel. Bitter apple skin finish top of tongue and back of throat. Like her nose, not much of anything else.
Final Thoughts: the least impressive of the Barley John beers I tasted during my vacation with the sis. Barely there for a bock, she most certainly wasn’t anywhere close to a doppelbock.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 badgerben (4253) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - APR 6, 2010
Dark brown color with a thin head. Slightly sweet caramel aroma. Dry grains is the dominant flavor. It takes a few sips for the toffee to come out, otherwise if I was blindfolded, I would have thought this a strong pale lager. Light vegetal quality.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BDR (2534) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - APR 5, 2010
A nice dark brown color with off white head. A light, sweet aroma. A really sweet body with a lager yeast afterbite.

Pours a dark brown with a thin, off-white head. Mild aroma is quite malty with some fruity, nutty notes. Flavor is also very malty with hints of caramel, raisins, plums, and nuts with a slightly smokey finish. Alcohol comes through toward the end. Medium bodied with little carbonation. Overall this is a decent brew.

Tap at Barley John’s. Dark brown pour, not a lot of head. Not much aroma either, slightly malty. Flavor is mostly malty, little bit of caramel. Finish is a bit smokey.
