Tap at the brewpub. Pretty close to a black pour with a really nice foamy white head. Aroma and taste of roasted malts, and maybe a slightly plastic element, but it works here. Nice beer.

On draught during Winterfest 2009 in St Paul, MN. Pours a clear dark cola brown brew with an average sized beige head that has good retention and lacing. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some chocolate, a hint of roasted nuts and some flowery hops. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of toasted dark malt, some chocolate and some flowery hops. Finish is smooth, nicely balance with semi-sweet and mild bitterness but has a definite dark malt aftertaste.

Growler from the brewery, shortly thereafter poured into a white wine glass. First of all I am impressed with the color. Its like a silk wall of black, its is really just a very dark brown but it sits there perfectly still yet delicate. It has a medium sized khaki head. Aroma is a bit mineral, very well lagered and clean, can tell its been 2 months. But it is really dry and papery and bland as well. Taste is better with well lagered clean chocolate and roast notes with a long lagered clean after taste of dry, lightly bittered, floral cocoa. Very easy drinking but still a fine made Schwarz with no faults and enough flavor to keep filling up a glass. Cool stuff, its hard to find a brewer who can do both ales and lagers this well.
