COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A Tropical Stout is a subset of ‘Foreign Extra Stout.’ These beers were originally brewed to be shipped to the tropics, and then developed a character of their own once they began to be brewed in countries such as Sri Lanka, Brazil and Ethiopia. Big, smooth, and a little sweet – they have all the roasty taste of other Stouts, but are ‘de-bittered’ to remove some of the harsh, bitter tannins found in heavily roasted dark beers. Very light on the hops. Warm fermentation gives these beers a fruity quality you don’t often see in Stouts.

Pours a very dark brown with an orangish brown head. Aroma is roasted malt and chocolate. Flavor is sweet roasty malt, caramel, dry milk chocolate, coffee, and fruit including dark bitter notes and berries. Medium body with soft carbonation and a dry finish. Pretty good yet subdued stout.

Sample at Brew Pub. Fruit is very subtle, but there. I thought pineapple, but mainly tastes like a good stout.

I didnt really find any of the sweetness as describd, but its definitely a smooth and easy drinker, Solid easy drinker, on tap at Barley Johns

Tap at Barley Johns. Rarely do I get to try a new Foreign stout, let alone the sub category of Tropical stout... Pours to a pitch black body with a light tan head. Black malt with a dry char aroma. The flavor has a light papaya flavor up front that is nearly immediately covered by the significant black malt. A little sweetness among the dry roasted coffee. Medium body has a lingering char.

Compared to a couple other beers (Dark Knight and Sour Brunette) I had before this, I found this more subdued, and the ’"tropical" aspect was not very pronounced. Still a respectable stout.

Tap at the brewpub. Very dark brown pour with a brownish head. Pours thicker. Sweet chocolate and light fruit on the nose. Creamy full palate. Taste is sweet, then roasty bitter late. Delicious.
