We all know that a 200th anniversary is a bicentennial. Did you know that a 20th anniversary is a vigentennial? Yup, Barley’s is celebrating it’s vigentennial this year.

The coincidence was too much for us, so we thought it would be fun to come out with a beer to celebrate that we’ve been around for 10% of Columbus’ entire existence!

A Few Fun Facts...

Columbus: In 1797, a young surveyor named Lucas Sullivant fpounded a settlment on the west bank of the forks of the Scioto River. An adnirer of Benjamin Franklin, he named the settlement Franklinton.

Barley’s: In 1991, we decided to open a brewpub to serve the City of Columbus. We settled on the old Reynolds Hardware Store, located next to the Yankee Trader on High Street. Our only neighbors then were the North Market and Tapatio on Park Street. We opened our doors in 1992.

Columbus: In 1803, when Ohio became a state, the capital moved from Chillicothe to Zanesville and back again. As a compromise, the state legislature decided to move it to Columbus, due to its central location.

Barley’s: We celebrated our first anniversary with Barley’s Christmas Ale. Mayor Greg Lashutka tapped the first keg of the season. He went on to tap the first beer of Christmas the next two years.

We celebrated our 100th batch brewed by brewing Barley’s Centennial IPA. And Bicentennial IIPA? Well, that was batch 1,331 downtown, and we’re brewing it at both locations. (Maybe we’ll have to do it again for batch 1,492!)

Draft. Poured hazy dark copper color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy sour citrus hop aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy smooth bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a very good beer.

Pours brownish orange with white head and great lacing. Aroma of citrus and fruit. Taste is smooth for a double IPA...piney and citrus hops with some malts for balance. Bitter aftertaste lingers on the tongue. I really like this beer.

On draught at Barley’s Smokehouse. This brew pours a murky dark orange color with a medium off-white head that evaporates steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of citrus, hops and malt. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops character and flavors of grapefruit and malt in the background. The finish is hoppy with a lingering fruity aftertaste. Solid beer all around.
