India Pale Ale is a beer style that’s increasingly popular with both craft brewers and beer geeks throughout the United States. By now, you might even say it’s mainstream in microbrew circles.

The style was originally developed for the long journey from Great Britain to their troops in India.

Because beer spoils easily without refrigeration, brewers had no choice but to load up on hops, a natural preservative. To balance that move, they added more malt, which upped the alcohol, the other natural preservative.

You get to enjoy it because we like to brew a big, bold beer. Lucky you.

Taster on tap at Barleys on Dublin. Mostly clear darker golden color, Thin off-white head leaves good, thicker sheets of lace. Medium to bigger body. Great, smooth, crisp, lighter carbonation. Nice bigger piney grapefruit hop aroma on this, light caramel malt. Good bigger bitterness, light to moderate sweet. Great IPA, very satisfying.

Draft sampler from Barleys in August 2012 from notes. Pours a hazy golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma and flavor have citrus and herbal hops, pale malts, light caramel sweetness, dry hay with moderate bitterness to the finish. Drinkable, basic IPA.

On tap at Barleys Smokehouse. Pours a cloudy orange with a thin white head. Aroma of citrus, pale malts. Flavor of pale bready malts, grassy hops, light fruits, light citrus, bitter finish. Light, somewhat malty for an IPA, smooth. 7/4/7/4/14 (3.6/5)

Nitro draft pour. Pours a translucent straw color with a thick, creamy white head of foam. I get a lot of tropical fruits in the aroma with some pineapple and mango coming through. A nice balance of bitterness in the taste and a dryish finish. Somewhats tacky mouthfeel, but still creamy. Good beer.

Draft in a sampler at Barley’s #1. Pours a cloudy gold color with a small, lasting white head. Aroma of mint, citrusy hops, and sweet malts along with a little snap of grass and herbs. Very clean and fresh. Same for the flavor, which had some clean, bright citrusy hop notes, mint, straw, grass, and pale and sweet malts. Light-medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a refreshingly crisp mouthfeel. A pleasant surprise, the first one on the sampler to really jump out at me.

Served on draft at the Smokehouse location. Pours a hazy orange color with a large frothy white head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of earthy and floral hops with nutty notes. The taste is big grapefruit and other citrus hops. Medium bodied.

5 oz sampler off of the Beer Engine at the brew pub (#2) in Columbus, Ohio. Pour is mostly clear golden orange with a loosely formed off white head. Aroma is quite faint, there is some leafy hops, a touch of citrus and only a hint of toasted malt. The taste picks up with grassy citrus hops, some nice resin grittiness and finishing with the toasted malt. This is much more hop focused, though, and they are the main story. Palate is light bodied, bordering on watery, with the soft fine carbonation and unfiltered mouth feel of the Beer Engine. Nice enough.

The beer pours a cloudy murky orange with a very light tan head with only about a half a finger of retention and poor lacing. The aroma is light citrus with grapefurit and orange dominating with light hops on the back end. The taste is really bad. Its all bitter pine mixed with metal and hops. The metal also has an orange taste. The feel is actually decent but this beer is utterly undrinkable.

Fron rediscovered notes, presumably on tap at Barleys, Columbus OH in Spring 2010 but my notes are incomplete and on a scrap of loose paper so I’m not 100% sure. No ABV noted. Pale amber colour. Modestly flowery aroma. Quite prominent citric hops in the flavour but it’s not especially bitter or astringent. Smooth mouthfeel with just a hint of sweetness. Not the biggest hop-monster of an IPA but this means it’s very nicely drinkable.
