A very nice beer. I could get very drunk on these.

I was fortunate enough to get the cask-conditioned version of this. Pours a deep, dark brown with a sea-foamy head. Aroma is not strong but it smelled pretty good. Smooth and slightly flat because it was cask-conditioned, I still thoroughly enjoyed this. Roasted malty flavor with a slightly bitter finish. This is a great beer for a cold winter evening.

Another great Barley’s beer! Dark and robust.
We had this beer on ’Firkin Friday’ (a Barley’s
tradition) This cask conditioned beer was really
different. It has no carbonation at all and
therefore allows you to drink it a lot faster
than maybe you normally can, especially something
as strong as a porter. This went down amazingly
smooth. A beer from the firkin is something
everyone should try, it’s hard to explain the
texture. I want to say it is like beer flavored
water - but that doesn’t sound good, and it is
definitely good! Please, everyone take a trip to
Barley’s in Columbus, Ohio so you can experience
it for yourself!

one of Barleys classics. A nice dark brown/brick color accented by a nice thin head. retains pretty good. a roasty sweet choco smell goes well with the roasty warm flavor. nice hop finish with the slightest hint of alcahol. AAHHHH brush the snow off your shoulder, get off of high street and belly up to the bar for a few of these. go firken on fridays if it’s being offered.

On tap. This is one fine porter. The pour is dark black with a thin tan head. Aromas are nice with a good roasted feel. The taste is really full--plenty of roasted malts, chocolate, and a nutty taste to boot. Very good mouthfeel--creamy and smooth as silk. One of the best porters I’ve had.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Gunshy (479) - Ohio, USA - JUL 4, 2002
This beer poured a very dark brown amber color(almost black). It formed a nice medium brown head which left some lace. The aroma was slight, but of malt and chocolate. The flavor was definately of chocolate(but not overpowering) and burnt malt. Maybe a little hops. The burnt malt flavor gave it a slightley bitter finish. This and the other aspects give some stout elements. A beer that has been getting better with each batch. Worth checking out.

Perfect color for a porter with an off-white head. Aroma of cream, roasted grain, charcoal, caramel and butter. Very nicely balanced. Great roast to caramel ratio. Some buttery notes with herbs and menthol. Possibly the most original porter I have ever tasted.

On tap at Alehouse #1 - Poured dark brown almost black with a short creamy tan head that didn’t stay very long. Nice aroma of roasted malts, a touch of smoke, some coffee, nuts, and a slight bit of chocolate. Flavor was much more chocolate than the aroma let on, but also some very nice roasted malt, nuts, and coffee notes. A surprisingly hoppy finish.. Palate is smooth creamy and mouth coating. Pretty tasty stuff!!

Had one of these on tap at the brewpub. The nose is weak for a porter, reminds me more of a shwartzbier. Hints of coffee and chocolate as the brew warms. Pours a solid black. The light brown head is creamy and mostly lasting with very good lacing. The big roasted flavor is chocolatey with a touch of pepper. The full syrupy body is soft and finishes with an alcoholic warmth.

Pint on nitro at the Smokehouse. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Roasty malt aroma with some coffee and a hint of black cherry. Full-flavored roasty coffee with a bit of chocolate and a creamy finish. Good stuff, and missing that watery character a lot of nitro brews have.
