A full-bodied barleywine that includes biscuit malt. This is the 2006 Homebrew Competition winner from Joe Eckhart. Enjoy it while it lasts, because we won’t be making it again!

Draft sample at Alehouse #1 on 8/8/07 under the name of Divine. Poured hazy brown color with an average fizzy off-white head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate tart fruit and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a sticky texture. Heavy balanced flavor with a heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of long duration. My expectations where met with a standout beer.

On draught at Ale House #1: This beer is a lovely dark mahogany color with a thin beige head that does not last very long. Spotty, quick lacing. Rich malt, caramel and fruity aroma. Full body with lots of toasted malt and caramel flavor, along with touches of hops and nuts. The finish is round and smooth with sweet malt and dark fruit at first, followed by moderately bitter hops. Enjoyable overall, as these annual homebrew competition winners tend to be.

hazy dark amber, wispy off white head, huge rich dark caramel malt aroma with lots of earthy hops and some hot alcohol to add to the sweetness, sticky sweet body, rich dark caramel flavor, lots of sweetness, touch of earthy bitterness tries to add balance but instead adds complexity,

hazy dark amber, headless, almost produces legs on the glass, light sweet caramel aroma, creamy body, rich fruity flavor on dark caramel malt, sweetness is present but appears tempered in relation to the big fruity character, a touch of vanilla in the sweetness continues to grow, little to no aparent bitterness, only a hint of alcohol shows up in the very last sip of the second glass, more subdued and fruity than the draft growler, not sure which I prefer

muddy burnt orange, fine beige head, drops of lace, light sweet malt aroma with no alcohol, sticky sweet body is back, rich dark caramel malt flavor with a fruity sweetness, light bitterness, on second visit the draft version does have a bigger body and more assertive dark caramel flavor and bitterness than the cask, draft wins

Bottled. Poured a deeper, garnet-tinted amber. Aroma first found sweet lighter fruits (apricot, passion fruit, and pear come to mind).. dried floral notes accented.. a bit of warm caramel trails.. enjoyed it much! Flavor had a sweet, decidedly English feel to it.. sweet fruity base with toasted caramel and medium floral bitterness.. tasty! Medium-bodied with a higher bitterness to it.. decent flow.

Growler sampled at the Pre-RBSG ’Tosa gathering on 6/21/07 courtesy of nolankowal: Pours a transparent dark amber copper with a thin, wispy-lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with a touch of fresh piny hops. Body starts with nice malty thickness and sweet caramel and light fruity esters balanced with a nice hoppy presence. A good barleywine.

Tosa gathering, thanks nolankowal for sharing this growler: Hazy amber hue with a small fizzy head and some lace. The aroma has notes of fruity esters (pear, apple, fig), noble and grassy hops, floral aromatics and a touch buttery. The taste is acidic fruits, biscuity and nutty malts, with a light bitterness and a hint of pepper. The mouth feel is biting and warming, does smooth out in the end, a chalky aftertaste. Not too shabby but it would be better with some age to it.

Pours hazy brown with a tan head. The aroma has smoky rich malt, lots of caramel and toffee - very sweet. Medium / full body with soft carbonation. The flavor has rich caramel malt and lots of fruitiness. The finish adds some thick biscuit qualities to the malt. An okay barleywine.

Dark copper to chestnut color with a tall, by style, off white head. Lightly fruit aroma with prunes, figs and apricots. Hints of floral and herbal hops spring in. Flavors match up with the aromas, but there is a light nuttiness as well. A true malt barley wine. Not over done or too hopped up. Fairly simple and easy to drink.

7/20/2007: Barley’s Spark of the Divine Barleywine from Barley’s Ale House No. 1 has a slight chill haxe. It is darker amber in color with a foamy beige head. There are sweet, strong malts in the nose. The flavor is malty, and bit sweet, toasty, and strong. This beer has a medium body and is pretty smooth. It is a decent barleywine overall with a great name.

Draught at the Oak Room during the Ohio Brew Week in Athens, Ohio. Rating #14 for this beer...

Thanks nolankowal for sharing this growler. The beer pours to a chestnut caramel colored body with a very thin white head. The aroma is sweet barley, strawberry seeds, and strawberry leaf hops. The flavor is sweet strawberry leaf hops and clean pale malts. "Simple", but quite good. The flavor finishes nice. Sweet full palate. Nutty chocolate. Nougat.
