stoutchap (293), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 17, 2008 Cask at Barley’s Smokehouse. Opaque deep brown - with the barest of mahogany notes, a persistent foamy tan head. Tar, malt, and a little alcohol. Most unique Imperial I’ve had in quite some time. The traditional notes are there - roasted malts, tar, and coffee - buried somewhere in the middle. The overwhelming note is somewhat acidic and reminiscent of a strong wine. Ends with a bit of an alcohol note (although very subdued). Very interesting and tasty - although not you’re traditional flavor for and Imp. Stout.
JB175 (1420), Holland, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 8, 2008 Growler from Schroppfy - thanks! Nice looking dark brown color with almost no head. Aroma is thick with bourbon, oak, vanilla, and chocolate. Flavor has a little coffee, chocolate, and way too much bourbon. The subtle oak notes and vanilla that should be there are overwhelmed by the whiskey taste - is it due to the Jack Daniels barrel (I think Weyerbacher uses them too and they are sometimes overdone too). Good effort, just tone down the whiskey. DeweyDell (146), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 10, 2007 On cask at Barley’s Smokehouse. Very dark color, lasting dense tan head, beautiful lacing... very appetizing-looking. Aroma is woody, chocolatey, sweet. Taste is much more powerful... lots of bourbon, oak, chocolate, alcohol. Almost like a Scotch Ale in it’s sweetness, a little overpowering with the bourbon flavor. Nice beer, unique... just a bit too much for me.
P.S. This was my 100th rated beer... I felt like I was accomplishing something great, and I got NO MUSIC. I am a failure as a beer rater. DrHomolka (626), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 9, 2007 Cask at the smokehouse. Pours black with a nice compact tan colored head and a large stream of bubbles rising to the top. Nice appearance. Aroma is bourbon. I literally could not pick out any beer characteristics in the nose. If I were blindfolded I would think I’m smelling a shot of whiskey. Taste is also straight bourbon. The mouthfeel is nice and silky and creamy but the taste is all bourbon. Certainly the most whiskey-infused beer I’ve ever tasted. Too much for its own good. ogglethorp (804), Ohio, USA Oct 8, 2007 Cask. Pours dark brown almost black, but some light passes through, with hardly any tan colored head. Aroma is oak, bourbon, soem coffee, roast and chocolate, but those flavors are hard to pick out over the bourbon. Flavor is mostly bourbon and oak, with some chocolate and roast notes coming through as it warms. Palate is medium to full bodied, mildly carbonated, finishes warm and bourbony. Huge let down, I was expecting good things based on what everyone said about the tap version. On cask the boubon flavor is way overwhelming and renders this beer useless, even as it warms to basically room temp, the stout flavors hardly penetrate the bourbon. Big disappointment!!
