COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This one is a bit tough to place. It could be an IPA, and we thought about placing it there, but then we thought we'd get too much flack because it's different than what you're used to in an IPA, or even an Imperial IPA. It drinks like an impressive ESB, but with more pronounced hops. It's almost like we blended two styles to come up with this one. Indeed, that's what we did. We know it sounds crazy, but they do it for scotch, so why can't we do it for beer? We're calling it a Peated Bitter, though we're up for suggestions as to where you'd place it in the Garden of Beer

An artful brewery blend of Robert Burns Scottish Export Ale and Centennial IPA.

On firkin. Pours a hazy amber color with a soapy off white head. Aroma of butterscotch, light floral notes, light fruit. Flavor is caramel, some fruity notes, light floral hops. Palate is medium bodied, mild carbonation, finished some where between sweet and bitter. Somewhat watery mouthfeel. Somewhat bland. Nothing terribly exciting.

Tap. Pours a hazy copper color with a small off white head. Aroma is caramel, citrus, toffee. Flavor is caramel malt, citrus, peat, soem pine. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, bitter finish. Alright, bothing spectacular here. Probably would have enjoyed the two on their own much better.

On tap at the Smokehouse a few months back. Clear amber pour with a medium tan head. Nose is malty with some c-hops and caramel. Aroma is nice except that it smells messy as if the ingredients are working against each other instead of being in harmony. Flavor is caramel malt and grapefruit with a semi-sweet finish. Interesting attempt combining styles and not too bad.

Enjoyed at the Smokehouse location. In a word, it’s OK. Bit of light colour with a white head.No aroma. Taste of sweet caramel. Expecting something noticeable hoppy, and at 7.5 - tastier.. Maybe one day long ago it was and the recipe has tilted the kilt side of the ledger. Lower score as a strong.

Draft at BMRAF 08. Poured hazy amber color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate sour citrus, malt and earthy aroma. Medium body. Medium bitter & sour flavor with a medium bitter finish of moderate duration. My expectations were met.

Interesting blend of the IPA and the Scottish Export. Pours a dark orange. I get a toffee, mildly sweet smell with this with faint centennial hop undertones. I can taste the smokiness of the Scottish Export and the pale floral and light citrus-ness of the IPA but together they more separate than blend. Not sure these are the best complement to each other.

On draught at the Smokehouse last weekend. The beer pours a hazy dark copper color with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily. Thin rings of lacing. Aroma of earthy malt, citrus and hops. Medium body with flavors of bready malt and citrusy hops, with light smoke and spice in the background. The finish is moderately bitter hops that linger awhile. Barley’s does not seem to do blends very often, and I am not sure if this beer is an argument for or against them attempting it again. Overall this is an interesting beer but not one that would be at the top of my list on future visits.

UPDATED: APR 12, 2008 Hazy orange/copper color with a beige head. Aroma of a little wheat and citrus. Flavor of grainy malts and citrus hops. Ok, but not great. It is pretty drinkable.

3/13/07: Draft @ Smokehouse.
Fresh hop aroma. Deep orange-brown body accompanied by an X-S light almond colored head. Flavor was very fresh – cirtus (grapefruit) and fir tree. Clean & bitter finish. Quite yummy – even better with Joy!! Would like to try this one on firk.

On tap at the smokehouse - Pours a cloudy amber with a short offwhite head that doesn’t stay long. Good smokey caramel aroma with some grassy and just a touch of citrus hops on top. Flavor is a very interesting blend of peat, toffee, caramel, and centennial hops.. Definitely enough hops to make that malty Robert Burns Scotch go hoppy. Pretty well balanced and a very easy drinker.. I did really enjoy this one.. It was quite interesting having tried both of the blended beers several times..
