Cask at the Bricklayers Arms Derby Beer Fest. It pours darkest brown, with a foamy tan head. The nose is charcoal, salted liquorice, maple syrup, varnish and ask. The taste is soy sauce, charcoal, varnish, salted liquorice, toffee, roasted malt, bitter chocolate, seaweed, boozy and dark cherry, with a big roasty finish. Full body, soft carbonation and slightly sticky mouth-feel. Big flavour and good balance. Nice.

On gravity, at Barrow Hill Beer Festival - black body, tan foam, festival look really. Nose is chocolate, licorice, black cherry, coffee. Heavy cloying sweetness, all the flavours coming from the nose carry on to the taste. Oily, sticky, thick mouthfeel, long finish. Great one to start a festival.

Bottle. Black with a beige foam. Aromas are roast coffee and dark chocolate with winter berries. Soy sauce with cola and almond alcohol. Peppery with raisins and some smokiness. Flavours are molasses with spicy hops and warming alcohol. Fruity and earthy with dry roast coffee and dark chocolate and grapefruit bitterness. Really well put together.

Gravity at Birmingham Beer Festival 2011. Beautiful dark, with a brown head. Smells strong and malty. Rich, smooth strength. Can’t really pin down the flavours. Very easy drinking and tongue pleasing. Some toilet hop and maybe some rum. Not my usual taste, but ... like a lot.

Cask at The Bricklayers Arms Derby BF. Pours dark, brown-black with a slight head. Nice sugary, dark malt character with mild roast. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Faintly warming finish, lightly roasty with dark sugar. Very good beer.

Cask Handpump at the Roundhouse, Barrow Hill 14/05/2011 Fruity roast aroma. Beige head. Black very strong in alcohol and a little rich on the palate with a hint of dryness in a bitter warming burnt roast finish.

Cask (gravity dispense) at Reading Beer Festival on 27 April 2011. Very dark colour - almost black. Thin tan head. Plenty of chocolate in the aroma and flavour. A touch of bitter coffee on the palate too. Firm and relatively dry. None of that fat malt stickiness that can be found in imperial stouts. On the other hand, perhaps it’s just a touch short of weight and body for a big beer but that’s just a minor quibble. Overall, very enjoyable and satisfying.
