Darker than usual ESB named after the bull terrier. Off-white, loose, creamy head, reddish bronze colour, clear. Strong caramelly, nutty and chocolatey malts in the nose, blueberries, dates, pepper, bark, nutmeg, tobacco. Restrained fruitiness, refreshing, crisp, medium carbo, smooth nutty maltiness, caramel, abruptly replaced by a confident peppery and leafy, very long hop bitterness. Atypical for the style but a very enjoyable ale.

Bottle from the Cartmel village shop. Appearance - a lovely cherry auburn colour with a nice head. Nose - red fruits over biscuits. Some caramel too. Taste - more red fruits with ginger biscuits. Palate - close to medium bodied with a crunchy texture and a long dry malty finish. Overall - lovely ale.

Gravity dispense at the Happy Man May ’14 BF, Englefied Green, 22/05/14. Clear chestnut brown with reddish hues an a good sized light beige covering, good lacing ensues. Nose is rich caramel, biscuit, fruit loaf. Taste comprises candied orange peel, more fruitloaf, caramel, light spice. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light bitterings in the close. Adequate ESB.

Cask conditioned handpump Veritas Leeds 18/07/13. A reddy brown coloured beer with a very tight white creamy head and lace. Subdued fruitiness in the nose. Rich malty fruitiness in the mouth. A long finish. A good sweeter bitter. More than decent.

Fat, Drunken Duck Inn, Cumbria, UK. Mörkröd med snygg krona. Doft av melass och kola, även tydlig melass i smaken, Bra, hyggligt bitter avslutning. Kvalitetsöl.

On cask at Cloisters. Pours an amber brown colour with a decent beige head. Aroma of chocolate and caramel. Similar flavours, quite malty overall, with moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Nice.

Cask at GBBF 2010. A brown beer with a yellowish head. The aroma has notes of malt as well as hints of butter. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and chewy toffee, leading to a dry, bitter, and citrusy finish.

Bottle from Booth’s. Copper with a fine white top. Muted aroma with some light muscovado, toffee and Allsorts notes waking up. Drinks silky with malt fullness; caramel-spread oak, marzipan, milk choc, faint husk and roast. Well made, full, savoury and very slightly dull bitter. But I’m digging the oak.
