3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DruncanVeasey (5138) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, - JUN 7, 2009
Bottle from Hinckley B+M. Black with red edges and a beige halo. Balanced smoky aroma with soot, Twiglets, coffee, cinder toffee and decaying old leaves. Slick and tasty with uncomplicated briny cocoa, yeast extract and coal. Good roasty finish with clinging burnt afters. Enjoyable stout, at a snip.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 25, 2012
Jan 2010: Brown 500ml bottle, poured into a Westmalle chalice (twice).
The beer looked good, huge, thick biege coloured head, rich and creamy. Very dark body, a true black colour.
Strong coffee and chocolate smells, both heavily roasted/burnt.
The coffee aroma turned into a bitter coffee bean taste, drying the mouth as I drank it down. It was certainly interesting and different, sadly its mouthfeel didn’t do it for me. No richness or creamy feel apart from the head, what a pity, almost watery for such a strong tasting and smelling stout.
Must remember this is a very cheap beer, very good value, even if it wasn’t my ’cup of tea’.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20 nealgersh (19) - South Yorkshire, ENGLAND - SEP 20, 2011
This is brewed by Wentworth (whose beers I usually enjoy) for Barnsley Beer Co. It was bottled and only £1.19 a bottle - Barnsley Beer Co pitch themselves as "affordable". All good so far. However, the chocolate and coffee overtones mentioned on the label were very hard to detect. Good colour, It’s a bit too gassy. There’s good sourness about it, but overall it feels and tastes a bit thin, with an unsatisfying finish.

500ml bottle. Pours black with a frothy tan head. Aroma is roast malt, some coffee and vinegar. Taste has roast coffee to start and lots of roast malt on the finish. Too fizzy.

Bottle from Rhythm & Booze in Barton. Jet black, thin but lasting beige head, gentle condition .Gentle bitter coffee and chocolate in the nose, soft and sweet in the mouth with hints of chocolate and roasted coffee with some low level fruitiness, finish is mostly roasted with some fruity blackberry notes but still heavy on the coffee and a suggestion of burnt malt.

Also bought at my local B&M which is proving to be a good source of quality brews at discount prices! This has a lovely depth of coffee and choclate flavour that belies it’s 4.5% abv. For the price, you could just neck it, but it’s worth savouring.
