A golden, glittering strong pale ale, well balanced and with a European combination of Slovenian hops and a unique German finish

Beaten gold with a greenish tint, slight mist and a slim white halo. Gelatinous citrus-flavoured confectionary aroma of Jelly Tots and Rowntree’s pineapple jelly, with a greener tomato leaf undercurrent that’s pushing an 8. Bright floral/squeeze of lime hop, bitter peanut bite, grass and celery muskiness joining the party. JHB but more so. Fine husky peanut brittle afters. Massive relief after a clutch of murky BC stinkers; crisp uncomplicated GA slugged back with relish. Sink got none.

Nov 2009: Brown 500ml bottle poured into a pint glass, vase shaped and ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged. Very pale, lager looking, the labelling did say ’Pilsner type ale’. Huge white head sat on top of a clear golden lager look-a-like beer, full of life, bubbles rising through the body and clear to see. Slovenian hops used, but not named, whatever they are they don’t give anything to the aroma, which was almost non-existant apart from some sweet malted biscuit notes. A blend between a pilsner and a UK pale ale, certainly different and challanging to the palat. Your eyes say lager, your tastebuds say ale. Well carbonated, which doesn’t help the mind sort out the flavours from lager to ale. Yet again a good value product from Barnsley Beer, they don’t pretent to be classy and their prices are very keen, another winner in my opinion.

Bottle. Blond with low carbonation. Hoppy and quite crisp. A bit like a cross between a pils and a bitter.. Pleasant but uninspiring witha particulary tacky label.

Pale and lager like in appearance, quite a dry and hoppy taste a lager influenced ale

Bottled, 500ml from Booths at Poulton, Lancs. Hazed yellow gold with no head. I’m having quite a few problems with these Wentworth bottled beers, this was sharp, tinny, unsettled even though it has been in my normal storage area for over a month. Vanilla with a little citric lime note. Not great but drank it.

rauchbier (3203) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - SEP 16, 2009
Bottle from Rhythm & Booze, Barton upon Humber. Gold, thin shortlived white head and low condition. Gentle caramel and banana in the nose, with a slight flowery hop note, good solid honeyed Bohemian hop note in the mouth with a delicate sweet maltiness and traces of caramel re-emerging with time, lingering chalky hop bitterness in the finish with more maltiness briefly shining.
