Bottle (dregs)… Backus’s Backdoor Bash ‘08 … Murky prune-juice colored lager with a small, creamy, beige head. Great retention. In the nose, smoke and dark fruits abound. Medium-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Acidic, pleasantly sweet flavors meld with moderate bitterness. Tangy, then dry, finish. Muchos kudos to Ibrew2or3 for bringing this one to the Throwdown!

Sampled @ Backus’s Backdoor Bash. The pour was of a cola color. Now the nose was smoky but it smelt of an ashtray? The flavor was smoky and thankfully the ashtray was hidden. The alcohol was hidden nicely as it finished of slightly dry.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 bb (5888) - Alamo, California, USA - OCT 22, 2008
Bottle. Mahogony beer with a tan head. Caramel, smoke, and light chocolate aroma. Sweet caramel flavor with light dark fruitiness and light smoke. Medium-plus bodied. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Sweet caramel and light dark fruit lingers. Needs more smoke.

Tasting at mcbackus 10/19. Brown pour. Not good. Smokey, sour, odd. I couldnt drink much of this, but I am not a big fan of rauchbiers anyway.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 after4ever (5294) - Brier, Washington, USA - SEP 21, 2008
22. Pours nearly opaque black with a thinnish tan head that surges up into big mousse and then falls quickly back to a slim layer. Nice sweet black bread nose with some bacon and campfire in there. Watery-ish medium body with bacon, campfire, and black bread again. No major flaws, no major signs of imagination, either, though. Not bad but it’s pretty boozy to sit back and savor when there are beers with 40% less booze and ten times the flavor.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 skoisirius (1192) - Earth, Washington, USA - SEP 13, 2008
22 oz bottle. Pours brownish black with a bit of a red hue to it. Tannish head with small red tints. Aroma of sweet dark malts with a hint of sugary smoke. A tiny bit of charcoal is also definitely present midst the light cocoa powder. The flavor brings out a rounded sweet malt note and body intertwined with milk chocolate. Very smooth and slightly watery. The finish remains fairly sweet and malty with a ever so tender note of smoke that lingers in the sides of the mouth for a good few minutes after a sip. The 9.5% is absolutely undetectable. Overall, well thought out, just not executed as perfectly as it could be.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 robforbes (1892) - Bremerton, Washington, USA - SEP 8, 2008
pours black with a red tint when held up to light, just a wisp of a tan head that is gone as soon as you blink, not much on the lacing.
smell is of campfire smoke, beef jerky, salt, a hint of cocoa, a little malt, graham cracker.
taste is watery, smoke, some malt, few hops, touch of cocoa, ends a little dry and bitter.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 beerinmarch (2830) - Washington, USA - AUG 18, 2008
Pours black, dark brown towards the edges, smooth tan head that requires a vigorous pour. Big smoky nose, earthy and charred with licorice and dark chocolate. Palate has a nice creamy quality, the smokiness is strong, but blends well. Definitely smokier then Alaskan smoked porter, I really enjoy smokiness, so that is a plus. The excess alcohol still stands out, but that should mellow a bit with time. Enjoyable beer, but there are probably others you could find at equal quality at a lower price point.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Angeloregon (2055) - Portland, Oregon, USA - AUG 17, 2008
Bottle from By the Bottle in Vancouver, WA--Poured a dark brown body with hints of chestnut and a thin grey head. Smoky, malty, sweet, sticky, boozy, caramel nose. Gripping, prickly biting mouthfeel. Much like Aecht Urbock but stronger and slightly less smoky. Very tasty and would be great to cook with. Powerful booziness.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20 glkaiser (1214) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JUL 16, 2008
Very dark brown with thin head. Smokey aroma with a bit of sweet malt. The taste is a well made mix of smoke and sweet caramel malt. The 9.5% ABV is hidden insanely well; same with the 7 Swabians. The body is the main thing that bugs me w/ this one; it’s a bit oily and thin. Maybe a bit of cardboard in the taste as well....
I love smoked beers, and I could see myself having more of this one. Could be tweaked for sure, but well done overall.
