3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
(Cask at Crosse Keys JDW, London City, 20 Nov 2008) Reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, nutty nose with dried fruit, caramel and sugar or honey. Malty, nutty taste with notes of dried fruit, prunes and caramel. Low bitterness with the hops disappearing in the sweet and nutty malt. Medium body, fairly sweet. Interesting, not bad, but hardly amazing. In short: sweet caramel with roasted nuts.

Cask Conditioned at J.D. Wetherspoon - The Knight’s Templar, London
Amber color. Simple aroma, light honey. The sweet caramel flavor is pleasant, with a light touch of cookies, balanced, easily drinkable, with correct final bitterness. Easy but pleasant.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask at ’Spoons, Milton Keynes, in Wetherspoons Festival ’08. Copper amber with a small off white head. very little aroma: perhaps a curranty sweetness. Sweet taste with a little earthy malt in the background and that gentle fruitiness. Not very bitter. The whole effect is rather dull and flaccid.

A Mes rate: cask at the Crosse Keys ’Sporks.
Dark copper with a slim white head. Strangely sweet. Bloody and metallic as hell. Very green and leafy. Far from decent.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Cask handpull at Crosse Keys JDW. That’s a bit startling. Very distinctive, not sure I entirely like it. It’s a bit dusty and earthy. Quite full. Not entirely pleasant. toffeeish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Brown amber with white head. Sweet and nutty right from the off, I wrote sweet chestnut and hazelnut. I was really pretty impressed with it, but maybe that was because the other beers in there were so hopeless. Late drying, rich fruity with caramel. mmmm.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: DEC 9, 2008 Cask-conditioned at the Commercial rooms JDW, Bristol 1/11/08. Deep amber with next to no head. Aroma of caramel, red fruit and a hint of herbs. Flavour was very bitter, to the point of being overpowering, with the wattle seed adding a touch of strangeness. One was quite enough.

Handpulled cask at JDW Watford. Dark amber with fair white head. Dominated by earthy bitterness. Similar to Holt’s. Couldn’t identify wattle seeds if I tried.! Good quality bitter.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Gold with a ring of white head; nutty aroma; caramel sweetness with some roasted nuts, very full bodied with the consistency of runny honey. Lack finish, and way to sweet for me.
