"A real bitter, for those that warrant the finest."
This inaugural Barons Extra Special Bitter (ESB) is an English style ’special’ bitter produced by Australians for Australians. At 4.7% ABV, Barons ESB pours with a brilliant golden colour, topped with a rich cream head. The aroma offers an inviting mix of caramel and malt, combined with hop driven fruit resulting in a ’crisp’ and full nose made to drive the senses in the heat of an Aussie summer. Barons ESB offers a rewarding balance of caramel malt sweetness supported by medium - high bitterness. The chosen noble hops deliver subtle fruit and spice character, accenting the enjoyable bitterness. With medium body and carbonation, Barons ESB is the real beer experience.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2007 Nicely hoppy aroma, with yeast and tannins. Very much in the English style. Moderately tannic, moderately hoppy, some potato flavors, a light spice, dry caramel. Great packaging, foggy brownish-gold, big head. Finishes with some stewed fruit and sourness. Pretty drinkable. Rerate: This beer really grew on me as I worked my way through the six over a couple of days. It’s imperative that you let the brew warm - the malting really comes through when it’s not ice cold. Very servicable, and very true to style.

The beer looks good enough, amber with a nice head. The aroma though is weak with just a hint of malt and a little caramel.. The flavor is malty sweet with a bit of fruit. Very little bitterness. Feels a bit watery. Not my favorite.

This also had a nice fruity aroma. A bit and darker and a bit more hops and less fruit in the body than the lager. A nice session beer.

Maris (543) - Canberra, AUSTRALIA - AUG 14, 2010
From a 330ml bottle on 15/8/2010. Has a quite unusual aroma of fruit, nuts, and burnt toffee. Begins with sweet malt and caramel flavours and finishes off with a decent and quite long, slightly spicy hop finish. A serviceable bitter which rates streets ahead of their pale ale.

330mL bottle. Pours slightly hazy gold with a thin head that settles to a ring. Nice aroma of honey, caramel, biscuit and some grass and citrus. Medium sweetness and bitterness with a malty, toasty and mineral-like flavour. Light-medium bodied, average carbonation with a lingering finish.

ComradeK (526) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - JUN 6, 2010
330ml bottle. Pours a hazy red-amber, with a minimal head. The aroma is a mixture of subtle coffee and sweet malt. There is a strong leafy and citrus hops flavour to begin, which segues into a smooth, lingering malt and chocolate finish. A reasonable interpretation of the style, yet not quite up to the standard of a proper English bitter.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a foamy white head that lasts a while. Aroma is mainly grainy with hints of caramel and honey. Flavour is grainier still: biscuity, cerealy, malty, with some subtle hop bitterness. Watery mouthfeel and very high carbonation don’t help things. Pretty ordinary beer.

Bottle:   Amber in color, a really heavy and vibrant burnt orange hue, moderate off-white head, frothy, nice lacing, lively carbonation.   Looks the biz.   Malty nose, slight cereal, a touch grainy.   Meh, average.   Nothing that entertaining.   Certainly no real hop character.   Quite cereal like on the tongue.   Exit yields a touch of cardboard.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Needs a bit more hop character.   Not all that crisp for a bitter.   A little flat.   Not bad by any means, but an average brew at best.

Bottle (330ml). Copper-amber body with a film of lingering white head. Aromas of sweet caramel malts and fruity hops. Taste is moderately sweet malts balanced by a medium hop bitterness at the end of the palate. Medium-light bodied with an average carbonation. A run-of-the mill boutique Bitter.

Bottle. Orangey-brown, beige head. Mainly caramel aroma. Taste has lots of fruit sweetness with just about enough hops to balance, but certainly not enough for any lasting bitterness. Not special, but OK.
