2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
This widely available malt liquor is often the only thing on Singapore supermarket shelves apart from Tiger and Heineken. It’s made with imported European hops and malts and I’d say it was a fairly decent knock-off of Carlsberg Special Brew, also occasionally found in these parts. I guess I’m in a minority in not minding either beer. Wouldn’t actively seek them out but most of the time I’d rather drink this than Tiger/Heineken. This was deep gold and held its head well. The aroma was soft, sweet and not especially beer-like. More like watery tropical fruit cordial and canned pear juice with some faint pale malts mixed with a shot of Vodka. Medium bodied and sofly carbonated, creating quite and oily mouthfeel. The first sip offers some Juicy Fruit chewing gum and marmalade fruitiness before a big blast of alcohol. There are some bready malts holding it all together. Lots of fusels in the finish. Call it sacrilege but this is like a very coarse, very distant relation to Duvel. (330ml can from a Singapore supermarket)

found this in vietnam. holy bad beer. this one pours just like a weak looking pale lager then you drink it and it overfows with bad off flavors and overpowering alcohol presence. cereal backbone of graininess, slighlty sweet.

UPDATED: APR 24, 2009 Can, brewed by Guinness Anchor Malaysia
Dark honey golden color, small white head. Aroma of apple peels, cider, malts and alcohol. Light to medium bodied. Quite weak palate. Alcohol comes in later with warming effect. Papery malty, clean but inspiring strong lager.
Re-rated Indian version, Asian Pacific Brewery Mahatrast, alc. 7.5% Similar to rating from Malaysian can. Golden color, white head. Apple-fruity and grainy aroma. Taste is similar: apple, petrol, alcohol. Same numbers than in Malaysian version.

Ooooh, I’m the tenth rater, and thus the ’Giver Of Percentile Status’! This is an interesting position for me to be in, as I didn’t find this beer to be nearly as aweful as the other raters did. Maybe its because I had it in Singapore, from a bottle, with a best before date of 06.2006 (6 months from now). Anyway, this poured a deep amber with a thick head generating excellent lace and showing long retention (not a bad start-- good marks for appearance, considering its a lager). Very malty aroma, with a noticable fruity hop character. Chewy malt palate, heavy mouthfeel, with a sweet ripe-banana note on the finish. The alcohol is apparent and very warming, but not harsh or overpowering. Still, after finishing a 600ml bottle, I was ready for a sleep by the pool! Anyway, I am definitely the anomaly amongst the general attitude towards this beer, but I have to remain honest and say that this was a decent example of a strong lager.

1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottled. Pale yellow/orange larger. Sweet floral aroma that leaps out of the glass courtesy of the ethanol evaporating from the surface of the beer. Sweet and challenging flavour. Presented in a nice bottle and not an oversized can this beer just barely escapes the bagging that aggressively strong larger normally receive. Laughed at Sully’s rating. Purchased and consumed in KL.

1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
A very pale beer given the ABV. This looks exactly like an innocuous 4.5% lager. Slightly floral and citrus note that then hits you between the eyes when you take the first sip. This is a big beer that isn't as bad as some say. On the other hand it is NOT a session beer. The label indicates that it won a champion's trophy for International Strong Beer as voted by the Sial D'or in Paris (???) The competition must have been pretty poor, either that or the judges were grubby homeless men with the arse hanging out of their trousers.

The people who buy this only drink this to get drunk faster cos' it's 8.8% strong. There's too much gas in it, and the overly sharp taste put me off immediately. This beer is like drinking stomach acid, you know the taste you get when you're puking during a really bad hangover? That's Baron's!
