biggenius29 (155), Hamilton, Michigan, USA Aug 19, 2007 22oz bottle poured into a Trappist glass. Pours mahogony with a large light brown frothy head. The head fades away rather quickly leaving a small film, but no lacing. Looking through the glass it is clear, not bottle conditioned. The aroma isnt much, there is some slight caramel malt along with a hint of citrus hops, grapefruit. Taking a drink I was very pleased compared to the aroma. What hits you first is alot of citrus, mainly graipfruit, then a slight orange hop flavor. Malts dont really shine through in this. In the end there is quite a bit of bitterness that lasts for a while in your mouth. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. I feel the body was a little lacking for a strong ale, I feel there should be more body. Overall I was not impressed with the aroma, but it is one tasty beer and in the end that is what counts, the body was also a little thin, but the texture was silky smooth going down. ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Aug 18, 2007 Appearance: Pours a clear, medium bown body with a small white head.
Smell: Faint, malty aroma with a light brown sugar quality to it. Hints of citrus.
Taste: Mild dark toffee sweetness with more mild hints of citrus and finishes with a tea-like bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Soft carbonation.
Drinkability: What an odd duck. Could use a bit more sweetness to offset the bittness, but then again, when don’t I say that? CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Aug 17, 2007 Bottle thanks to cewldre: Pours a transparent copper ruby with a thin, wispy light tan head. Aroma of citrusy grapefruity hops and some lightly toasted caramel malt. Body starts with a mild caramel sweetness and some light fruity citrusy notes toward a drier, toasty and more bitter finish. A pretty crisp American strong ale, but could use a touch more sweetness. shp555 (1678), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 17, 2007 Pours an amber brown color with light brown head. Aroma malty, roasty, with grassy, and piney hops. Flavor is roasty, malty, with a piney, grassy hoppy finish. buckybeer (666), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA Aug 8, 2007 Big thanks to Shigadeyo for trading this to me. Nice looking pour here. Dark amber with a light tan head. Nice carbonation and some sticky lacing. Pretty big malt aroma with bitter hops, caramel. Flavor takes on hints of molasses, spicy booze and tartness. Thanks again Craig. Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Aug 6, 2007 Bottle from Alexsdad06. Pours mahogany with a great retained tan head. Smells of rich malt, lemons, oranges, hints of earthiness. Tastes lightly bitter with some nice spicy touches and peppery hints. Mouthfeel is rich with a great earth finish. Hints of booziness. Well done! Darkover (1308), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 3, 2007 Dark ruby color with a small beige head. Aroma and flavor of caramel, toffee and hops. Not very hoppy for a 2ipa. bdjames29 (272), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jul 31, 2007 Draft at Dilly Deli. A thin line between Double Dark IPA and American Stron Ale exists - Peanut at Dilly Deli describes that line best. Whatever you want to call it - this is a delicious brew with a nice hoppy complex and an above average alcohol presence and content. I believe that the aroma and the initial taste gives way to the malt backbone; whereas finish is dominated by that before mentioned hop complex. A good local brew. My full rec.
