Commercial Description:
In the early 20th century, Cincinnati was presided over by the strong armed political power broker George "Boss" Cox. Holding court high above an Over-The-Rhine saloon, "Boss" Cox's authoritative grip on the city could often be relaxed with a smoked sausage and a hearty brew. Our Double Dark IPA infuses a bold, delicious malty character with copious amounts of American and European hop bitterness. There's a new boss in town. Malts: 2-row, Munich, Carapils, and Caramel ;Hops: Cluster, Cascade, Czech Saaz ;Color: Ruby ;Food Complement: Steak, prime rib, venison, spicy dishes

The Dan Journal #151. Tasted 1/14/08. 22oz bomber. Murky with a hazy brown hue. Layer of taupe head. Citrus fruity nose. Multiple fruits. Strawberries and red licorice. Big and full bodied. Mild yet atractive burn. Really enjoyable drinking!

The bottle poured rich amber with dark cherry hues and an inch of sticky tan foam. Intense malt aroma with pungent hop accents. Smooth with bread crust and caramel flavor a bitter roasted finish.

bottle - Pours dark copper with a two finger white head. The hoppy aroma has some slight notes of citrus and pine, but not a lot, and a little malt. The body is maltier than I expected though some strong hops flavor is still there. I thought it was easy going for a double IPA, so I guess I can see the characterization of it here as an American Strong Ale instead. It’s a decent beer, but lacks the nuances of a great one.

I’d never heard of this brewer, but was happy to find something new at Sweetwater Package. Hop characteristic was mostly pine/spruce; very little in the way of fruity hops. Clear brown, clear color. Moderately bitter flavor and very crisp. An OK strong IPA, but a better strong ale. The strong ale characterization is more accurate.

Kind of a brassy, medium brown/amber body with a thin ring of bubbles along the sides of the glass. Heavily fruity aroma - lots of plum and prunes. Some caramel in there, and heavy on the malts. The flavor is the same, except that bitter hops also abound. It tastes quite oxidized, actually. Like its been sitting around for awhile.

A strange beer, this - medium ruby in color, with a compact, short-lived head - aroma of piny hops, molasses, burnt sugar, corn syrup - thin-bodied - flavors of caramelized brown sugar, corn syrup, stale hops - over-ripe, nearly rotting fruits - the hops and spicy character near the finish almost balance out the beers artificial-tasting sweetness - finishes with an almost bock-ish caramel and fruity character - decent.

Well, for a double IPA, it’s not as hoppy to the nose as I expected. A nice brown color with only a slight head that didn’t last long. Has a sweet malty flavor and then a nice bitter bite to finish. Not bad.

Dark in color but still transparent. Aroma is grassy, piney, alcohol. Flavor is pretty much the same with the alcohol coming through a little to strong, spicy hop bite, with a heavy malt body. Dark and bitter is a good description. Nothing exceptional.
