Arayaga2 (933), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 6, 2007 Reddish brown with a quickly fading whitish head. Semi skunky hop aroma competes with slightly sour malt. Caramel and muddy hop barrage in taste. $5/22oz jetzler (622), oklahoma city, Oklahoma, USA Oct 29, 2007 Bottle, Malty somewhat chalky aroma, light hop bitterness, especially for an IPA? Nice light sweet malts, some medium hops not very hoppy in the taste either, alchol is well hidden. Not too bad at all. dmac (1420), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Oct 27, 2007 Poured a reddish/amber with a cottony white head. Aroma of caramel malt and slight hops. Thin to medium/thin body with slight carbonation. Flaovr of light hops balanced out by a good dose of malts. I didn’t think this was anything special but to be fair it was towards the end of the night. yobdoog (1426), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Oct 17, 2007 Very dark with a nice little head. Sour and hoppy aroma. Light body. Taste is slightly sour, malty sweet with a little hop bitterness. Pleasant mouthfeel. Enjoyable light Strong ale. theisti (1640), Leawood, Kansas, USA Oct 9, 2007 22 oz. bottle from Dansting. Huge thanks to Dan for lugging this one back from his annual RV trip. Pour is a dark reddish brown that is clear with a thin and quickly fading tan head. Aroma of faint sweet caramel malt and maybe a bit of a metallic twang. Taste is pretty much a complete mess, starts a little sweet, then goes resinous and falls apart into a sour metallic sharp bitter (not good) finish. Hops barely present, though the alcohol was. I am certain (based on other reviews) that this bottle had some type of problem. I drank maybe 6 of these 22 oz. Barrel House appears to be a reputable brewer, and I would love to give this one another shot. Again, thank you Dan for giving me this one, super generous of you. PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Oct 5, 2007 Bottle: Reddish/amber pour with a creamy tan head. Sweet malts come through in the aroma. There’s also some fruity suggestions of berries, dried roasted figs, and with a swirl some spicy hops (hallertau) are detectable. Mild carbonation. Not as much body as you would expect at 8.6% ABV. Sweet/spicy malt flavor. Has subtle dark berry hints, toasted rye/dark caramel malts, with a hint of hop spiciness in the slightly bitter finish. Seems Barley Wine like. A decent, but overall sweet American Strong Ale. WabashMan (798), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Oct 4, 2007 Upon pouring, I was enthused...this beer looked like Arrogant Bastard, and that’s always a good start! Upon smelling, however, it was vastly different. Malt dominates the nose, rather than the hoppiness one might expect from a "double dark IPA," and the nose is also somewhat vineous. Flavor features more hops, but it’s well balanced by the malt. Chewy and somewhat thick mouthfeel. A good beer, & thoroughly enjoyable. thoramel (39), USA Oct 3, 2007 Pours a deep purple with a thin head. The aroma does not reach out and grab you like other strong ales but is not unpleasant after I’ve poured it. The flavor is a mix of different hops but just isn’t well balanced and I was left feeling that there should have been a lot more of something there. It is a very strong brew with a good amount of malt and alcohol, and that aspect of its flavor turns up as it warms. I don’t think I agree with their term of Dark IPA as I didn’t get the hoppy bitterness that I associate with that style of brew.
