Growler picked up from the brewery. $10. Pours a slight hazed deep woody amber with a nice fluffy beige cream head and nice lacing. Aroma is very hoppy (a bit hoppier than this past summer which is an improvement), big dank citrus, pine sap and needles, centennial like, super fresh green almost minty hops mixed with just a nutty yeastiness and a bit of caramel malt when it warms up. Flavor is clean, slight nutty yeast and biscuit with light caramel and toffee- then more grassy citrusy hops, pine resin, leathery rope nuttiness, clean medium toast, med to light crystal, citrus oils, pine sap, and a very clean slight minty bitter finish. Really solid Amber ale- the over-use of american hops makes this really nice, and better than almost any other amber ale out there.

Pouring at TAP NY. Pours a crimson hued amber. Huge hops, citrus, fruit and more citrus. Earthy malt, spicy toast. Crisp and earthy. Long toast and grapefruit bitterness. Long earthy finish. Good stuff.

Deep amber pour with a tight pale tan head. The aroma has a lot of bright grapefruit citrusy hops and a little bit of deeper sweet malt character. Some light iced tea aroma along with a touch of light fruit as well. There is a hint of richness and a fairly pronounced bitterness as well. A sort of earthy bitterness along with a nice rich character. There is a bit of caramel but it’s not overly sweet. Has a touch of soft toast as well.

Growler from the brewery. Pours a hazy dark orange with a thick light tan head. Aroma of hop oils, grassy hops, citrus, caramel malt. Flavor is a nice balance between the hops and malt, leaning towards the hops in this case (although certainly not as hoppy/more malty than the IPA). Tasty stuff! 7/4/8/4/15 [3.8/5]

10oz cask pour, translucent, bright read with zero head. Great nose, candy, oranges, watermelon, flowers, honey, starfruit. Flavor is light malt, cherry, apple, watermelon, citra hops, light tropical fruits. Medium bodied, sweet, light bitter finish. Loved every bit of this.

On tap at Beirkraft during an event for the brewer. Like all the beers from Barrier, the Bulkhead Red is unfiltered giving it the characteristic cloudy appearance. Even described this as being more like a Red IPA than anything else. It starts fairly caramel and malty but a decent helping of hops close it out. Personally, I think it is not quite bitter enough to be an IPA, but fans of IPAs will certainly find something they like.

Tap at RnH - Cooper/red pour. Nose is sweet malts. Sweet caramel malts and a bit nutty. Bit hoppy for a amber ale but I like that. Citrus and piney, lots of meadowy notes. Light spice hops and a touch vegetal. Finish is dry and bitter, but unlike most Barrier offerings, the astringency doesn’t linger for long. Solid amber, better than most.

Draft at beer table. Deep red amber color, thin head. Smell is fruit hops and honey bread. Taste is like a hoppier amber with ipa qualities. Very delicious
