Aroma of perfect smoked grains and wood, a little toffee, lemon, bread, and wet hay. Flavor has medium apparent sweetness, low bitterness, and a touch of sourness--that almost funky wet hay note. Finishes dry. Absolutely perfect body, not at all watery like so many American efforts, but still sluggable with that dry character. The smoke continues to be readily apparent retronasaly throughout the taste and swallow, another significant difference from many American counterparts. A beautiful showcase of smoke with other complexities, perfectly balanced. I’ve come to expect greatness from Barrier, yet somehow this one has still managed to blow me away.

On tap at pony bar UES. This is one of my favorite barrier beers. Smoky but not too smoky, totally drinkable lager. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In short: A blond smoked blending meaty smoke and wheaty refreshing qualities. Good beer
How: Tap at Tap-NY 2012
The look: Almost clear blond body topped by a small white head
In long: Nose is slightly smoked with also light color fruits and hay. Taste is more smoked than the aroma hinted on. I got lot of meaty smoke (smoked pork), something I usually get from darker smoked beers. Add to that refreshing wheaty citric notes and you have a fun refreshing smoked. Another good beer I enjoyed at TAP-NY, and if you wanted to attend this festival but were unable to, don’t worry, I drank enough for the both of us.

Keg @ Alewife, Queens. Pours deep gold with a medium white head. The nose is smoked ham, charred grains and smoke. Lightly sweet, too. The taste is sugared smoked ham, oats, and soft sweet chocolate on the finish. Robust flavors. Medium body, active carbonation. Overall, fairly good.

Draft. Pours gold with a white head. Grainy and toasted malty aroma with lighter smokey notes. The flavor has smoked grains, a light sweetness, and toast. Nice.

Draft at Pony with Brendan and Streets. Pours a murky yellow body with white lacing. Aroma is light smoke. Mouthfeel is creamy with notes of smoke, light band aids and sweet meat sauce.

Draft at Pony Bar with Streets and James. Light golden pour. Palate has a mellow, subdued smokiness covering up a base that doesn’t really seem to have a lot going on in terms of flavor. Pretty lame despite the smokiness, which wasn’t enough to make the beer good to me.

Tap at Pony Bar. Hazy golden straw coloured pour. The nose is smoky but with notes of burnt hay, cherry wood and other atypical (non-beechwood) smoke. A little bit of sweet malt and a touch of toast as well. Sort of sweet chewy malt along with some lingering salty sort of yeast flavour. A little bit odd really. It’s not unpleasant but it’s unlike any rauchbier I’ve ever had.

Growler from the brewery for the Super Bowl. Go PATS!!! Pale hazy golden with nice white head and lace. Smoky woody whiskey (minus alcohol) and hay and grass aroma. Nice biscuity dry pineapple hay smoke wood grassy bready with hint of citrus. Nice light quaffable body without feeling watery. Pretty much the perfect session beer for my tastes.

The aroma is upfront smoky, meaty, like bacon, some lemon, caramel. The appearance is cloudy yellow, white head. The flavor is just like the aroma. The finish is smoke of course, pine, flowers. Medium in body, high carbonation. Enjoyable.

Growler from Brouwerij lane in Greenpoint. Pours a light gold, nice smoke aroma, with some grass etc. Overall, these guys nailed the style. Straight outta Bamberg, bitch!
