On tap at Dave’s Bellport Cold Beer and Soda. Pours black with a brown head that leaves a coating of foam on the glass with each sip. The beer itself leaves a film on the glass with each sip all the way to the end. Strong aroma of coffee (probably one of the strongest aromas of coffee I’ve experienced with no coffee actually present in the beer) along with some smokey notes and roasted malt. The flavor is more centered on the smokiness with wood smoke and a good dash of peat. Roasted malt and mild coffee in the flavor as well. Very enjoyable stout.

Opaque dark red. Unfiltered because it is barrier. Aside from the common stout qualities, the lights out stout is intensely smoky. Some may find this off putting at first, but it grows on you fast. This is, currently, the most bitter beer served at Barrier at 77 IBUs. If you can find your way through the smoke and IBUs, there is some decent roasted chocolate malt to be found. Good enough that I bought a growler of it on the way out (we will see how this beer is after aging a bit).

Growler from the brewery. Pours black with a thick light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, light smoked malt, bitter chocolate, light roasted nuts. Flavor of roasted malts and roasted nuts, light smoke, and a hint of bitter chocolate, light bitter hops. A hoppy, roasted stout, very delicious! Excellent stout.

I read about Barrier Brewing in the Ale Street News, and I have been curious to taste what they have been up to. This was on tap at RnH, but I find myself wondering if the staff poured me the right brew. This had a very light color for a stout. The sweet, malty aroma was pleasant indeed. The flavor was good, but much closer to an amber than a stout. I’m still scratching my head a little over this one.

Draught, 6.1%. Coffee-like aroma, a little sweet. Black colour, small stable light brown head. The flavour is roasted, has a little coffee. Some roast barley bitterness. A bit of alcohol which also gives it an OK solid mouthfeel.
