Sample at brewpub. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Leaves some lacing in the glass. Solid roasted malt on the nose. This is listed as a sweet stout but I'm not getting much lactose. The roasted notes are pretty solid on the tongue. Finished clean. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This was served in a pint glass at the brewpub. The appearance was a black color with a slim bar pourís kind of white to off white foamy head that quickly dissipated leaving some light clingy lacing. The smell had a graceful blend of roasted coffee notes with a rich sweet chocolate. The taste came across through the roasty notes. A slight roasty aftertaste leads to the same finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Rich smooth creamy roasty coffee and chocolate graces my tongue very nicely. Overall, this was my favorite beer from this brewery. Definitely have again.

A nice sweet stout with good drinkability and roasted character. Aroma is slight, pours black, itís what you would expect from a stout. Well done.

On tap at the brewpub. The pour is deep brown to just about black. They hit that on target. The aroma is of coffee and roasted malts. It had the aroma of a nice Porter. The body was thin to medium. The taste also had a nice coffee flavor and dark malts. It ended slightly dry.

I poured a 22oz bottle into a tulip pint glass. Its best before date was notched at August 2013. It cost $4 ($0.18 per ounce).

Appearance: Opaque dark black with no highlights. Forms a large, dark tan, frothy head which laces and retains well.

Smell: Plenty of roasted barley, hints of vanilla and milk chocolate.

Taste: Iím so used to drinking large, imperial stouts I sometimes forget what can be done with smaller versions like Berkshire Mountain Brewers Black Bear Stout. This is a by-the-book brew in the sweet stout style. It has everything you expect and nothing you donít. So, yes, itís good, but itís been done.

Light, sweet maltiness at the beginning of the palette. Slight milk chocolate flavors with perhaps a dairy flavor often found in stouts brewed with lactose sugar (not sure if this one is or not). Slight tanginess through the middle with hardly any bitterness, finishing with a short, but noticeable, burst of roasted malt or coffee-like bitterness. It fades away almost completely clean and rather quickly, making this a beer thatís satisfying, but a bit too fast for its own good. Not quite robust enough to be a dessert beer, itís a stout for the sake of drinking stout. I can live with that.

Drinkability: I had considered rating Berkshire Mountain Brewers Black Bear Stout a little lower because of the mild palette, but then I realized its drinkability is quite impressive. The mouthfeel is quite thin, but then again itís a deliberately lighter bodied beer. Itís soft and smooth across the tongue and glides down the gullet with ease. At 4.9% ABV itís perhaps a bit too big to be defined as a session beer, though drinking it in large quantities should not be a burden on anyone.

On tap at the brewpub, Barrington MA, on 20 April 2010. ABV not stated. OG 1051. Black, dry and roasty. Plenty of espresso coffee in the flavour profile. A decent, drinkable and quite tasty stout.

Bottle at Sanderís pace, NYC. Breakfast beer. Pours black with a small, rich beige head. Aroma is subtle roast and big milk chocolate. A good lacto presence here. Flavor REALLY doesnít follow as I had expected. It is only faintly sweet, with a modest roastiness and mellow cocoa. Light to medium in body with average carbonation. The roasted malts in the finish are more pronounced, with notes of tobacco and ash, light burnt earth, and mild grassy bitterness. Easy to drink, just not very characterful. Aside from the aroma, this beer reminded me of a mild.

Had this in a bottle marked: Berkshire Mountain. I believe it to be the same stuff. It had pleasant roasty flavours and a well carbonated feel but, as I find with many sweet stouts, it came across as quite metallic in the mouth.

Black pour is a bit oily and the head is tan. Aroma is light roast, milk chocolate, cocoa, a flutter of char is light and welcomed. Mouthfeel is pleasant and creamy, not especially viscous but appropriate. lavor is milky chocolate, cocoa roast and some cream. Reallly nice.
