3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 SuperDave (1934) - Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA - MAR 27, 2009
Sampled at the 2009 AZ Strong Beer Fest on February 28th, under the name NCAA IPA. Hazy copper pour with a foamy head. Aroma and flavor are mostly citrusy hops, with a good maltiness. Not bad at all, but not nearly what I would consider a double IPA.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sparky (2129) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - MAR 1, 2009
On tap at the AZ Strong Beer fest. My notes say NCAA IPA. Pours a clear dark amber with a beige head. The nose is floral hops and caramel malt. The taste is caramel malt and light citrus hops. Medium mouthfeel. OK DIPA.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 FlacoAlto (3143) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - DEC 20, 2008
UPDATED: JAN 18, 2009 Sampled at Barrio Brewing, November 2008
This arrives with a frothy, light tan colored head that leaves some sticky lacing on the sides of the glass. The beer is a lightly hazy, full amber color that shows a bit more red hued when held up to the light. After my meal of spicy fish tacos this smells malt focused with notes of softly toasted crackers and biscuit. There is a light, herbal hop component and a hint of citrus, but nothing like one would expect from a Pale Ale, much less a Double IPA.
The beer is sweet with lots of alcohol noticeable and there is a berry / citrus flavor to it. There is a lot of fruitiness to it up front with notes of grapefruit, citrus zest and an herbal-berry note (if that makes sense). The beer is thick and chewy, though not quite on the Barleywine side of the spectrum. There is a nice bitterness that solidly contributes to the entire flavor profile. The bitterness lingers in the finish with a warming alcohol note and a touch of astringency. Fruity hop notes of tangerine, lychee and some tropical fruit notes are noticeable in the flavor too.
I can not get over how hot with alcohol this beer is, I actually get a slight burn down my esophagus as I am drinking this. This is a decent attempt and definitely interesting.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hellbilly (3053) - scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA - NOV 27, 2008
tap @ barrio... rich hazy copper color with a fluffy off white head and lots of drippy/spotty lacing. the aroma is heavy on the caramel maltiness with lots of florals (hops and alcohol) and small doses of pine. the flavor is riddled with hops but is nowhere near bitter. lots of malt covers up any real dryness with the exception of the finish though it is far less sweet as most dipas. resinous, earthy and some citrusy hops show up from the blanket of malt. the finish is dry and somewhat spicy with a floral/medicinal/hotness from the alcohol vapors showing up as it warms. medium body coats the mouth before the hops have a chance to clean up. prickly carbonation and mild spiciness make me go back for more...
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 cbkschubert (2752) - Cochise Co., Arizona, USA - NOV 1, 2008
UPDATED: FEB 9, 2009 On tap @ Barrio - Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small, but long lasting off white head. Nice lacing all the way down. Aroma is mainly pine hops. Flavor is pine and citrus hops and very light malt. As the hops fade, maybe the malt will step forward. The bitterness lingers. Medium body. A nice first attempt at a 2IPA for these guys.
