2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 FlacoAlto (3143) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - MAR 26, 2011
Sampled on tap at Barrio Brewing; March 2011
This beer arrives with a lightly browned, amber-tan colored head that sits on top of a dark amber beer that has lots of red hues in it. The aroma smells sweet with notes of caramel and toasty grain up front, but then quickly picks up a softer buttery note that is a sure sign of diacetyl.
The beer has a rich sweetness to it, but has some spritzy carbonation to balance this. There is a touch of diacetyl here that is most prevalent in the nose at first, but the buttery note really lingers on the palate even contributing a certain slickness to the texture. If you ignore the diacetyl, and the fruitiness that is also in this beer, there is a clean lager note underneath (that sentence really doesn’t look very promising). This was an interesting attempt at a lager and a bock, but the fermentation program for this beer still needs some serious attention to detail and work, there might be a nice lager / bock here somewhere and I would love for Barrio to give this another go.

Draft at Barrio. Pours clear orange/brown; thin off-white head; spotty to poor lacing. Nose is sweet malt and peanut brittle. Flavours are sweet malt, some nuttiness. This is far, far, simpler than it ought to be, but I don’t dislike it. Hmmmm... Simple yet pleasant.
