COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed just like the original from Burton upon Trent. This style calls for a high hop rate combined with an elevated alcohol content because it was brewed to survive the journey from England to Bombay as rations for British troops. Huge amounts of two row pale malt with an addition of a few specialty malts provides a nice mouth feel buried under copious additions of Columbus hops. This beer is big but finishes clean.

Growler fill from Total Wine in Tempe. It pours out clear copper with a nice looking tan head of foam. The modest aroma has a bit of citrus and earthy lime peel notes as well as being a touch floral too. The taste is smooth to start with giving up malts and some citrus like hop flavor. To midway and into the finish a tepid level of grapefruit and lime like citrus hop bitterness is noticed. This is smooth and soft on the palate and not really all that IPA like and even short on bitterness for a Pale. Seems a bit more ESB. Hmm?

Pours a clear rich, fully red tinged copper color that is topped by a thin pale tan head. The aroma is full of citrus hop notes that evoke thoughts of apricots, grapefruit, and a slight note of pine. The taste is smooth and creamy up front with a light malty sweetness. This quickly moves to a full on hop bouquet of citrusy American hops. I get notes of apricot, tangerine, candied orange peel, and a finish of bitter pine needles. This is a nice example of an IPA, and is certainly my favorite regular beer from this brewery. This beer is a great combination of creamy malt notes up front and citrusy, bitter hop notes from middle to end.

On tap at Barrio Brewing. Pours a clear orange brown with a thin white head. Aroma of hop oils, citrus hops, tropical fruits, caramel malt. Flavor of sweet citrus and sweaty hops. Bitter and oily finish. Good ipa, slightly sweet but definitely hoppy. 7/4/8/4/14 (3.7/5)

Identical appearance to Barrio/Gentle Ben’s Red Cat Amber. Light amber body with a thin head. Dank hop nose, with a nice bitter undercurrent. This one breathes like a hot, humid Pennysylvania summer night with a whiff of skunk cabbage in the wings. Medium to light bodied and leafy, with some co-humulone heaviness, buy by no means overbearing. This one fits nicely into the funkier IPA niche. LIghtly bitter and dank, skunk cabbage finish.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2011 chelsea ipa on tap @ GB. pours a hazy orange gold thin white quickly disappearing head. aroma is grapefruit skin, pine, brown sugar and dried apricot. flavor mirrors the aroma without being too sweet. crisp dry finish with lingering grassy hops. medium body, carbonation and mouth feel. 7/3/7/3/16/3.6

on tap at barrio... hazy golden copper colored pour with a white film for a head. it is fairly unattractive and nearly murky... it smells a lot like canned OJ... minerally, cooked orange, pith, light yeastiness, mild non resinous pine and earthy spicy hops. the palate is a touch too sweet and thick... orange, caramel, pale malt, tingly pine and spicy hops. it is far more earthy and sweet than bitter and balanced. medium to full bodied but almost an unpleasant mouth feel due to the sugar level and lack of bitterness. 6/4/6/3/13/3.2
