The Ripstop Rye Pils is our reinterpretation of the classic pilsner lager beer: aromas of European malt and noble-type hops mingle with a dignified, refreshing, and clean malt character that is further distinguished with a generous addition of spicy rye malt, creating a beer that is at once malty, zesty, crisp, hoppy, and incredibly drinkable.

Free samples on draught at the brewery during Zwickelmania 2014. Some catpissy hop nose. Thought it was Citra, but the staff said that two varieties of Mt. Hood were used for aroma. Hazy light honey color. Substantial but somehow light sweet initial / sourness and bittering hops in mid / mild and slightly bitter finish. Not really much of pils character. Not bad, though.

Pricey 1500 yen + from Tanakaya. Picked it up due to the unique aluminum bottle plus I’d heard of Base Camp a hiking + outdoor oriented brewery. 5.7% It pours a deep gold, I was expecting more of an orange tint I guess due to the bottle and the fact it has rye in it... I guess rye doesn’t impact the color so much as this looks like a classic pils. The aroma is spicy, grassy, slightly bitter but soft. A bit of a sweet soapy or that pink soapy bubblegum I used to get sometimes as a kid. The body is slick & quite full with a bready quality to it. The taste is sweet, grassy & spicy with that soapy bubblegum plus mild minty spicy puckering notes from the hops. I like the palate, it is quite satisfying to drink - refreshing.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a dark copper color with a large white head. A spicy fruity nose. Awesome beer: flavorful, robust spicy hoppy flavors with rye malts, a good palate. Very fresh and tasty.

Poured from a 22 ounce aluminum bottle. Great packaging.
Aroma:slight sulfur character from the yeast, musty/earthy, malty/bready, some fruity/spicy hop character
Appearance: Golden straw in color with a long lasting bright white head
Taste: big bready malt character, fruity hops, honey, slight spicy note
Palate: medium bodied, thicker than your traditional pilsner, clean lager fermentation, the rye adds a touch of an oily character
Overall: I found this to be a tasty session lager, i enjoy the rye character though out this beer, malty, hoppy, delicious.

22 fl. oz. aluminum adventure bottle. Nice packaging concept, a threaded cap might complete it by making it re-closeable and re-useable, as well as some recycle info... just saying. Mostly clear golden yellow, foamy white head fades. Spicy rye dominates the aroma and taste, all but overshadowing the Pilsen malt and lightly bitter grassy hops. Average carbonation, lighter body, low hopped. Crisp, earthy and dirty makes it: LBW (Lagerboys Be Wary)

22 alumibottle. Whether you like this beer depends entirely on whether you can enjoy the commingled earthinesses of rye and grassy pilsner malt. Neither is super earthy on their ownses, but together they make a nice big pile of dirt. Pours a very slightly hazy bronzed medium amber with a dense and creamy light tan head that goes quickly away. Earthy rye husks and mild pepperiness combined with wet grass on the nose. Creamy medium body with lively carb, plenty of earthy grass and grain husk together on the mid palate. Long tangy finish. Kinda nice, but, then, I love me some rye and some pilsner, so there it is.

Alumabottle:   Hazy straw, moderate frothy white head, nice lacing.   Zesty grassy nose, rye, some very light citrus and spicy notes.   Smooth, grassy, a little dry and ashy.   Not as citrusy and spicy as the nose suggests, but clean.   Decent amount of sweetness to balance the normal grassiness.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Not too sharp, but its clean, lots of body, and a little different from the rest in that its sweeter with a soft rye flair.   This was pretty damn tasty!   Also gets a little barnish, musty, and rustic on ya too.   Winner!
