Sample draught @BBF 02/2014, ZA. Complex malt-aromatics ranging from candied orange, maple syrup, prune jam and cassonade, evened out by a modern dry palate and great choice of dry hops to top off the desert dubbel base with spicy orange zest and some green hop bitterness. No traditional Belgian estery fumes whatsoever. Easily one of the more accomplished, elegant and finely composed beers, at risk of being overshouted by bolder un-belgian concoctions at the festival. - To revisit from bottle.

33 cl. bottle @ ’t Brugs Beertje // 7 % Belgian Ale commissioned by Brugs Bierinstituut at the Proef // haven’t seen this anywhere else except @ ‘t Brugs Beertje & @ Brugs Beer Festival // assume that this is a very local beer // label is just the name in fancy Germanic letter type // reddish amber with an uneven off-white head // smells of sweet caramel, candy sugar, caramelized apple, caramel malts // taste is Belgian yeast, sweet caramel apples, candy fruits, caramelized brown sugar, dash coffee, bitter floral finish // bit too much carb. for me // much better than I expected this is quite good // definitely better & more memorable than the White Zwaan that they also commissioned, if you ever come across this, you might consider picking it up

Red brownisch, small off-white head. Caramel, chocolate on the background, spices (hint of vanilla). Taste is chocolate, little herbal, soft but also above average carbonation. Sweet, light bitter touch in the finish. Excellent beer, very well balanced, comlex, enjoyable.

Clear red copper, nice frothy tan head, stays a while, thin layer remains, not much lacing; sweet malty nose, somewhat vinous, brown sugar, caramel, roasty, nuts, dark fruit syrup, raisins, orange peel, spices; medium roasty sweetbitter taste, hint of chocolate; full-bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation; nice bittersweet finish with spicy notes, malty bitterness at the end.

Good cream-coloured head with some lace over deep red-copper beer. Lightly smoked - like roasted chestnuts and roast malts, faintly spiced smelling. Taste turns out to be more bitter than expected, and definitely spiced; pinch of cacaopowder. Quite slick, well-bodied, even a bit chewy. Interesting, but not really great. Strikes me as a rather Walloon-style strong ale.

(Draught) Clear dark amber with a small, very lacy head. Aroma of diacetyl, caramely malt, dark bread, some sourness. Flavor is licoricey, roasted-caramely, diacetylic, slightly sweet and syrupy. Medium body, lowish CO2. Quite interesting, although not very clean. 5345
