drpimento (796), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Jan 7, 2009 Bought this through ebay from England this past summer. Label says "July 15th 1977". Cork finished & wax covered, very dark brown embossed bottle. Time and air were not kind to this beer. The cork was very dry and crumbled. The beer poured totally flat and very cloudy. The color was dark brown. Aroma was heavy dark ripe fruit. Flavor was a chemically bitter YUCK. Undrinkable. *sigh* Rciesla (3513), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Dec 9, 2008 Updated: Nov 3, 2009Bottle. Pours a golden brown body with a tan head. Sweet fruity phenols with a light paper accent, slightly oxidized. Im surprised to see this is 10 percent as i didnt write anything about the etoh finish. 3.4
1929, Bottle shared by Andy, wow without a doubt the oldest beer i have ever had. The cork had to be forced into the bottle from deterioration. I had more or less the ass of the bottle but still delighted to have tried this. A murky brune lacing almost like dried milkshake residue surround the bottom of my chalice. I am surprised that this is still consume-able. Extreme oxidation, ash, tar, paper tones, wood, little chunks of cork floating around. Some dull like oxidized one fruity esters and a toffee like undertone. Not sure i can assign a number to this second rating due to the sample size and having the bottom of the bottle but still quite gracious to have had the opportunity to try the oldest beer i’ve had to date by a landslide. Thanks Andy. BrianK (190), Livingston, New Jersey, USA Dec 8, 2008 Shared by Miketd. Thanks Mike. My notes read very english tasting with english hops. Descent. Not complex but very easy to drink for 10 percent. Im glad I was given the opportunity to try this one. Thanks again Mike. jbrus (4835), Delft, Netherlands Nov 30, 2008 Bottle@Home, bottled as Kings Ale. Madeira, honey, plums and oxydized aroma. Copper colour, almost no head, beige head, fair lace. Sweet, oxydized, dust, earthy, sugary, madeira. Sticky mouthfeel. Way past it’s BBD. weaselkenievil (738), Cheshire, England Oct 11, 2008 Cask at the Rail Ale festival in Chesterfield. Dark brown with a reddish tint with a thin head. It is sweet but as well balanced as Cristiano Ronaldo. Lovely lovely stuff. Licorice, dark fruits, little hint of mars bar. Hmmm nice. goldtwins (4079), Nesconset, New York, USA Oct 7, 2008 Poured a very hazed copper-brown color with a minimal head. Sweet caramel malty aroma with some notes of bread and dark fruit. Seem to get a decent amount of hops in there as well. Fruity flavor with a medium sweetness. Bitter finish that mingles with the sweetness for the start of the finish. The sweetness fades leaving a long bitterness and a little warmth. medium bodied and a little silky from the low CO2. ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Sep 29, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clear, dark reddish-brown body marked by a few stray bubbles here and there.
Smell: Aroma of dark caramel, aromatic tobacco, a glass of sherry garnished with golden raisins, and bread left in a toaster oven for a bit too long.
Taste: Rich maltiness tasting of sweet dark caramel with a slight breadiness in the background. Maybe a touch nutty, too. Resonant vinous fruitiness throughout. Pinch of tobacco. Hints of a tannic woody component. Earthy, medium bitterness cleans the palate of all those rampant, pesky sugars and clears the way for a drying, bitterish finish. The alcohol presence is noticeable, but not quite overbearing.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. No carbonation, but that only helps to facilitate a smooth, port-like mouthfeel.
Drinkability: I’m happy to have had the rare opportunity to try this. There’s some roughness to it, but, overall, it’s a fine, flavorful English barleywine. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Sep 1, 2008 Handbottle @ [ Tasting by Maria ].
