COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask & bottle: Occasional.
Abv has varied between 9.0% and 10.5%.
This is the very first Barley Wine to ever be mass produced. It is named after the brewery in which it was first brewed. This beer started a tradition in British brewing in which all brewers produced a barley wine. This beer is only produced occasionally and as such is very hard to find.
Bass King’s Ale is a batch of Bass No. 1 which was started by Edward VII during a visit to the brewery in 1902.

Clear medium brown color with a virtually none off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, dark berry’s - raisin, prune, date, licorice, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, finish feel is salty. Flavor is very rich ;o)) Body is medium to full, texture is oily - syrupy, carbonation is flat, finish feel is light alcoholic. Very nice ;o)) (170608)

Party fass at RBESG 2008. A deep red beer with an orangey head. The aroma is dominated by notes of over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and over ripe fruits, but a light oxidation is also present.

Bottled (As King’s Ale, thanks goes to GarethYoung for this one!). Murky dark brown colour, not much head. Aroma is oak barrel, alcohol, plum and a lot of dark fruits. Flavour is very wineous mixed with strong oak barrell. Totally lovely. The aftertaste has dark fruits, alcohol and roast in it. Just lovely in my opinion. I like Madeira wines, and this one was actually quite close to one, flavour and aromawise. It was however quite acidic and vinegarish also...Which cuts the points down a bit.

Draught at RBESG. Very dark runy, small head. Deep aroma of paper and plum brandy. Sweet and full bodied. Fruity with lots of alcohol. Warming with some green hops, very peppery. Long bitter finish. Flavourful, but a bit rough around the edges.

Bottle at Kulminator as Bass King’s Ale. I thought it was from 1989, but seeing the other ratings, it might have been 1981. Quite vinous aroma, citric fruit, and mango? Almost clear brown colour, very small head. Sweet, oxidized flavour, quite a lot of cardboard. Very late dried fruit aftertaste. I just do not like old beer.

Bottle @ Danish Summer Gathering, Ulfborg 2011. Thanks Nightfall, Bottle from 1977. Pours ruby brown with a small bubbly off white head. Oxidized. Sherry and port and some vague dark tart fruit. Caramel and toffee. Dammn - nose holding up pretty well. Tobacco , earth and wine. Very vinous. Subdued alcohol. Wauw!

Vintage 1981, 23 years old, bottled by Bass - Mechelen, 8% ABV; had it on 2004-06-05 at Kulminator
Dark amber color, brown hue, small frothy head, but peristent. Mature malty aroma, caramel, cookies, Christmas spices. Quite flat; ripe malt, drinkable but too old; Madeira; sweet (not syrupy). Strange experience.

I don’t think it’s fair to put together the ratings of the fresh beer and the old bottles…

Bottle @ fonefan tasting. Bottled in 1977! Small head. Color is dark brown. Aroma and taste are earthy, caramel, raisin, malt and a little skunky.
