Commercial Description:
This is the very first Barley Wine to ever be mass produced. It is named after the brewery in which it was first brewed. This beer started a tradition in British brewing in which all brewers produced a barley wine. This beer is only produced occasionally and as such is very hard to find.
Bass King's Ale is a batch of Bass No. 1 which was started by Edward VII during a visit to the brewery in 1902.

Hand bottle from cgarvieuk. Pour multiple shade of reds and browns with zero. There’s carbonation, but not head. You can see the oily, thick body though. Very impressive. Big, strong, and sturdy nose. I got toffee, chocolate, cherry, and a plethora of other fruity goodness. Lots of chocolate and toffee flavors here. And alcohol. Kind of on the boozey side. And not as complex at the aroma would leave you to believe. Still pretty tasty. Very big and rich. Oily. and warm. Clean finish. Man, I really wish I would have shared this. Sorry guys.

Courtesy of kmweaver. Dark brown body with no head. The nose is rich caramel and toffee and dark fruits. The flavor is very sweet with lots of caramelized raisins, toffee, gingerbread and cookie dough. Full body is round with low carbonation and a bit of a warm finish.

Hand bottle thanks to Craig. What a rare opportunity this is to try a great beer that has almost gone out of existence after over 100 years. Yet they still make Bud Light, but I digress. Pours a deep ruby shade with a tiny hint of a head forming. The aroma is very sweet, full of candies and chocolate, also some fruit aspects. The taste was very smooth and quite nice; mostly a very sweet brown sugar and toffee, tons of fruit, almost vinous, and there is a hint of burnt malt and sourness in the finish. A very good beer, a dessert that would fit into the finest establishment. I am honored to have the chance, let’s hope I can try it again. Thanks Craig. Additionally, I have learned that the last time they brewed this beer was 1997, so probably a 1997 version drank in 2007.

(Draught from mini-keg) Pours dark reddish brown. The aroma is medium to heavily malty and vinous with tones of caramel, fudge, bread and dried fruits/raisins/plums. Undertones of earthy and herbal hops. Some alcohol warmth. The flavour is fat malty and vinous with notes of caramel, fudge, dried fruits and fiery alcohol. Medium hop bitter, medium sticky sweet and rather salty. The mouthfeel is syrupy, chewy and light spicy. The finish is dry and tart. Near full-bodied.

Tasted at WeeHeavySDs. Another awesome rarity. This isn’t from a 100yr old bottle, but rather from a new batch. Still very historic, interesting, and a special treat to try. Nice malty aroma. Deep rich brown amber color. Low carbonation. Sweetish. Mellow. Some sting on the tongue from the alcohol.

Rating #1500. 1902 bottle shared by ggaughn and/or kkearn at BCTC. Thanks so much, Greg and Keith! Wow, P2 last year and No 1 this year. I love this fest. Pours a murky brown with a small tan ring of filmy lace. Nose was cardboard, soy, cocoa, sweet malt, molasses, sherry. Flavor was kinda sweet, kinda salty, more sherry, caramel, and oxidation. May have been past its prime 90 years ago, but its still held up remarkably well over the entire 20th century. I’m not usually too impressed by these crazy old beers, but this one was really special.

RBESG08 grand tasting. Huge thanks to Chris for making this available.
Clear dark red-brown body. Nice malty, slightly chocolatey aroma. Aggressive taste, very noticable alcohol, nice nutty maltiness, caramel, some chocolate and some bitterness. Very nice, and I love the fact that I’ve had it!

BCTC 09. Oldest beer I have tried to date. 1902 Kings Ale. Remarkable how well this held up after 107 years in the bottle. The cork seemed to be a bit crumbled. Aroma is awesome. Sweet sherry, oak, vanilla, chocolate, faint cardboard. Not as much oxidation as I thought I would smell or taste. Flavors of vanilla and molasses, dark malts and semi tangy fruit essence. Not soured just a hint of dark fruit. Plums, figs. Smooth and pleasant to drink.
