3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 EdKing (1302) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 24, 2012
Bottle from Kris Wines. Opaque black, tan to off white big foam head. Texture is not oily, but medium bodied. Nose is caramel ale fruity, grain husk, roasted malt, marmite, liquorice, dab of chocolate, dab of ripe fruit. From the nose you know it is going to be one of those old style ale based stouts, which is caramelly and grain husky over very strong coffee and choc. Taste is caramel, ale fruity, roasted malt, marmite, little bit of bitter hop, and fair amount of carbonation. Finish is roasted bitter malt, bit of coffee bean and caramel.

4th and 6th August 2009 Cask at GBBF. Opaque black beer. Light dry and soft palate. Sweet malt and light chocolate with some repressed dark berry fruits. A little smooth vanilla, then estery bubblegum sweetness. Rich spicy hops toward the finish and spicy bitterness. Complex beer. Tasted twice to get everything out of it.

Had this ultimate stout at the Paisley Beer Festival, April 2001. Cask, gravity dispense. Jet black colour with barley brown head. Strong intense aroma of black treacle, dark chocolate and Kirsch notes linger long. Velvet like texture in a smooth mouthfeel and no lacing. Dark complex malts deliver a plethora of flavours with black forest gateaux flavours, notably cherry kirsh prevailing. Sweet flavours of dates, clootie dumpling, treacle toffee, rich plain chocolate and liquorice. No indication of hop resins present in the short aftertaste. Strong dark malt presence in the finish with prunes, roast coffee, bitter chocolate and root liquorice vie for attention. A superbly complex Imperial Stout and one to seek out.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Scopey (3243) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 5, 2012
Old bottle at Chriso’s Fullers-Gales Tasting (thanks Chris!). It pours very dark brown, with a thin tan head. The nose is roasted malt, cocoa, coconut, charcoal, musty, sulphurous hint (due to age?). The taste is charcoal, roasted malt, liquorice, wood, chocolate, caramel and toffee, with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium to full body and fine carbonation. Smooth and well balanced. Perhaps a bit past it, but a classy brew nonetheless.
