COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottle conditioned.
This exceptionally smooth stout is produced from the original recipe that was shipped to the Russian port of St. Petersburg for the Czar’s Imperial Court. The smooth mellowness derives from the long maturation time in cask before being bottled in very limited numbers.

Bottled from minicask. Dark brown with slight white head. Heavy roastiness in this with charred coffee husk notes, bonfire and rich malts. Quite smooth and treacley sweet with a touch of pine resin in the body. The alcohol seems slightly more pronounced than in the No. 1, giving a bit of a christmas pud finish. A sipper.

Poured an opaque black color with a small, tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, light cocoa, wood, some smoke, caramel, and dried fruits. Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, some charred wood, though balanced by the darker fruits, and a mild alcohol presence in the finish. Thanks for sharing kmweaver!

Cask@GBBF 2009. Opaque black color, steady medium-sized beige head, some lace. Dark (caramel) malty aroma. Sweet licorice, cough syrup flavor. Good body. Quite good, flavor is just a bit too medicinal.

Handbottle per Jason. The beer pours to a dark brown/black body with no head. The aroma has a creosote and pine sap/soy sauce/fish sauce quality. Pine hops. The flavor is bitter and has a strong black patent and licorice. Not masterfully brewed in my opinion. The palate is medium bodied and has a long bitterness from the malt.

Courtesy ChzMan. Black/brown/garnet. A few tan bubbles. Lightly roasty malt, some dark bready malt, subtle cocoa, subtle oak. Like a strong brown porter. Medium/full body, lightly carbonated.

Mini keg courtesy of cgarvieuk, big big thanks to Craig, bottled by Doppelganger, aka Casey, cheers Casey had this 03-07-08 Poured very black, maybe even shark eye black with barely any head of note. The warming alcohol shows quite quickly but its the stunning streaky bitterness that lingers for forever and a day. Roasted coffee on the nose along with some chocolate, Loz got a metallic taste in the mouth like brass, I never but my dad also noted that. I enjoyed this, maybe not quite as much as I expected but it was a well done Imperial Stout that was more simple and less in yer’ face than some in this category. Once again a big thanks to Craig for sorting this out, cheers mate!

Cask at the White Horse Old Ale Festival, 27th Nov 09. Very dark brown in colour. Sour, slightly milky aroma. Rich malty taste and a smooth finish. I wasn’t really taken with this (but then again, I’d just been floored by the Baladin)

Starts nice with a roasted and sweet nose that recalls soy sauce. Black, near opaque color and a low tight tan head. Wasn't too impressed with the flavor and balance, though it wasn't bad. An overall quick flavor profile of sweet toaste malt finishing with rather long chalky coffee tastes. Thinner than I wanted and could have been a little richer and complexer. Nice.
