Commercial Description:
This exceptionally smooth stout is produced from the original recipe that was shipped to the Russian port of St. Petersburg for the Czar's Imperial Court. The smooth mellowness derives from the long maturation time in cask before being bottled in very limited numbers.

Huge props to TheCheeseMan for giving me a pour of this. Dark, dark chestnut color, nearly black, very little head, what’s there is tan and soapy. Light sweet roastiness present, slight smokiness, raisins. Pretty mild tasting - slight roast, pretty sweet for an imperial stout, real straightforward. The malt and roast compete here, but the lean towards maltiness (in terms of an imperial stout), doesn’t detract, but gives a different idea of the style. Pretty nice.

Small handbottle shared by kmweaver. Dark, rich tawny brown colored body... thick and viscous swirling in the glass.. capped by a very small tan head. Nose is spicy and malt-centered, resinous, rich toffee, sweet chocolate, syrupy roast, toasted grains, etc... very nice, very complex, rich and deep. Flavor is thick, syrupy, full and resinous, notes of roasted maple, very light char, some toasted bread, some maple and plum flavored tobacco... really quite remarkable.

Generously shared by kmweaver at BCTC Saturday. Thanks Ken! Pours a dark brown with some nice white lace. Nose has a bit of light chocolate, brown sugar, and wood. Flavor is light chocolate, sugar, alcohol, and wood. Pretty good, but also slightly underwhelming. Like Ken, I was a little surprised to learn this was an imperial stout as it had qualities more similar to an oxidized barley wine.

Poured an opaque black color with a small, tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, light cocoa, wood, some smoke, caramel, and dried fruits. Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, some charred wood, though balanced by the darker fruits, and a mild alcohol presence in the finish. Thanks for sharing kmweaver!

11.2oz handbottle, courtesy of Doppelganger, opened Saturday at BCTC. Thanks, Casey! Pours a bright, slightly hazy brown color; light tan head with nice, fine-bubbled lacing. Loads of dried dark fruits, cola, and sweet maltiness in the aroma; soft edges with an English hop character; mild alcohol. In general, this reminds me a lot more of a barleywine than an imperial stout. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: relaxed carbonation; touch of oily, watery, dried dark fruits; English bitterness, and some basic tea-like malts; an odd, slightly light rendition. Lengthy finish: dried dark fruits, brown sugar, and toasty maltiness.

Pitch black color, no head. Prunes, some oxidation and caramel in the nose. Liquerish palate. Licorice, some fruity notes and grassyness, alcohol & dark malts.

RBESG08 grand tasting. Huge thanks to Chris for bringing it!
Dark brown body, no head. Light nutty malty aroma. Sweetish nose, yoghurty and chocolaty. More of the same in the taste, with some perfumey (hmm) maltiness leading the way. Not the best imperial stout around, but it was definitely worth trying.

Appearance: Pours a simple, dark brown body marked by a few random bubbles. Smell: Dark, roasty malt aroma with notes of licorice, dark fruits, and a sprinkle of high-quality top soil. Taste: Dark maltiness with a fair amount of roast. Very restrained sweetness throughout. Tiny morsel of chocolate. More of that licorice from the nose. Thin measure of grapey fruitiness precedes an earthy, roasty bitterness. Hint of hand-worked leather. Drying, earthy finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Mild carbonation. Drinkability: A fine, decent stout, but nothing to lose your head over.
