Commercial Description:
This exceptionally smooth stout is produced from the original recipe that was shipped to the Russian port of St. Petersburg for the Czar's Imperial Court. The smooth mellowness derives from the long maturation time in cask before being bottled in very limited numbers.

Dark stout with a light coffee aroma and a dry coffee flavour. A nice strong stout.

I am in the camp that thinks this is an enjoyable beer on its merits but doesn't do so well set against other Imperial Stouts. Roasty, plum aroma, with a solid chocolate, roasted flavor--the flavor is the strongest suit, as the aroma is somewhat muted. The palate, however, left me underwhelmed. It is on the thin side, smooth but not especially rich. For appearance it is more translucent than you might expect. So, a good tasting beer and certainly worth drinking, but not something that sets the standard.

Bottled from minicask. Dark brown with slight white head. Heavy roastiness in this with charred coffee husk notes, bonfire and rich malts. Quite smooth and treacley sweet with a touch of pine resin in the body. The alcohol seems slightly more pronounced than in the No. 1, giving a bit of a christmas pud finish. A sipper.

Pitch black color, no head. Prunes, some oxidation and caramel in the nose. Liquerish palate. Licorice, some fruity notes and grassyness, alcohol & dark malts.

11.2oz handbottle, courtesy of Doppelganger, opened Saturday at BCTC. Thanks, Casey! Pours a bright, slightly hazy brown color; light tan head with nice, fine-bubbled lacing. Loads of dried dark fruits, cola, and sweet maltiness in the aroma; soft edges with an English hop character; mild alcohol. In general, this reminds me a lot more of a barleywine than an imperial stout. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: relaxed carbonation; touch of oily, watery, dried dark fruits; English bitterness, and some basic tea-like malts; an odd, slightly light rendition. Lengthy finish: dried dark fruits, brown sugar, and toasty maltiness.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown body with red accents with a tan head. Lightly roasty with light vanilla, raisin, caramel, and over ripe fruit. Decent.

Poured an opaque black color with a small, tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, light cocoa, wood, some smoke, caramel, and dried fruits. Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, some charred wood, though balanced by the darker fruits, and a mild alcohol presence in the finish. Thanks for sharing kmweaver!
