I’m brewing a pale ale now, so I thought I’d try this out to make some mental notes how I compare to a stalwart. Well, I haven’t tried mine yet (obviously), but this is not as good as I remember. Kinda bland. Yes, the deep amber color is still there. However, the aroma and flavor have gone - poof! The head and lacing are OK. Sam Adams tastes more like a bitter than this. Slightly metallic aftertaste. Mouthfeel is on the weak side. I don’t dislike this and I would try it again, but this is no longer the standard bearer for pales/esb’s.

Bottled at the BA lounge, IAH. This bottle says 5.1% It pours clear amber with a quickly dissipating off - white head. The aroma is sweet, stick, mostly caramel and toffee, toasted brown sugar, candied orange, cherry cola and generic fruitiness. The taste is crisp, restrained bitterness, caramel, toffee, big cola vibe, brown bread, cereal and some dried fruits. Watery mouth - feel and some prickly carbonation. Pretty basic stuff. Drinkable it is, but it is the sort of thing any old dirtbag could brew with a malt extract kit.

I cant believe i havent reviewed this yet, Bass is a good standard pub ale. It is a little light on aroma and taste, with hints of malts and not much else. However it is rather smooth and easy to drink and its not offensive, overall its a pretty decent brew thats worth a try. Originally rated on 11/15/08.

0.33 l bottle @ Finn McCool, Tokyo. Imported by Asahi. No idea about the appearance because it was served without a glass, just the bottle. Taste was mineral and malts. Not really any hops. Interesting but how close this to the original?

Pour is light, lager looking. thin soapy head. Smell is funky and skunky with odd earthy and roasty notes. Taste is pretty darn similar. It does leave a long bitterness ans sweetness after
