COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available filtered in bottles, cans, and kegs.
A version of Bass, primarily for the North American market at 5%.
Brewed from the late 70’s at Burton. In 2000, after Interbrew bought the Bass brand, production was switched to the Ulster brewery in Northern Ireland. In 2003 production and distribution was switched to Latrobe for a 12-18 period after which it reverted to the UK, latterly at InBev’s Samlesbury brewery. As of 2012, the US version was being produced at A-B InBev’s Baldwinsville brewery but production at Samlesbury continues for other export markets.

568 ml/19.25 oz bottle. What’s up with the size? It’s not metric or American. Oh well, at least the bottle’s a little unique. Pours a nice dark red with a small, thin off-white head. Sweet light aroma that is on the sharp side--like a sweet bug spray you could drink. Taste is bitter and a little burnt . Sweet too but it’s more of an undertone. Don’t really care for bitters but definitely on the malty side for one.

Nice cool reddish/amber color in the pour. Extremely bitter the second it hits your palate, but calms down as the beer warms up.

I usually only drink Bass when I feel like fixin’ up a Black ’n’ Tan. However, I had some Bass (draft) the other night, and it stands up alright on its own. The taste is, of course, immediately bitter, but it seemed like a softer bitterness than I get from excessively hoppy American beers. There’s isn’t a wide range of spice or caramel flavors as I’ve come to expect from "pale ales" either. The taste was generally more subdued, and, in a way, that was refreshing. The finish was minimally bitter--cool and clean. I think beer is generally better on draft, so I was a little more pleased with Bass this go ’round than I have been in the past.

On tap at Grace O’Malley’s: Pale golden/amber, scant head. Good taste of fresh, harvested barley. Sharp bitter tang yet finishes smooth, satisfying. Smooth, rounded mouthfeel.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2008 Dark amber with medium white froathy head and some bubbles. aroma of sweet malt. Dont know if it call it a bitter/esb... seems more of an marzen. Very sweet malt and carmal flavor, or maybe toffee is more accurate.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2008 From the bottle, this pale ale/bitter has a rich, coppery red-amber colour and a very nice, rich light tan head giving excellent lacing. From the tap, my experience is that the appearance is less consistently good. It has good body, and the flavours overall are pleasant and complementary. There is some mild toastiness, especially in the finish, and a faint but definite sweet toffee-vanilla element. The result is tasty, smooth, and drinkable, but somewhat bland. It’s good but doesn’t satisfy nearly as well as it looks like it will.
