Copper color with tall foamy white head. Sweet caramel malt and citrusy hops. Mellow caramelly malt with notes of biscuits, fruit and grassy hops. This is good for the style but have never been crazy about the style. To me this style always seems kind of flat, as if you opened the bottle and let it sit for several hours before you drink it.

[initial rating from 2008] Draught. Pours clear brass color with thin bubbly white head. The aroma is buttered toast with a little bit of herbal hops. the flavor is also light buttered toast with a little bit of fruit and hay hop notes, especially toward the finish. Meh. [update 2011] From a bottle this time. Still mostly buttered toast, but the hops come across as more earthy to me now than herbal. A classic beer, I suppose, but I just have a hard time getting into English pale ales.

one of my favorites before i got into craft brews. on tap at bw3s, aroma is almost non existent but wat i can smell is mostly a cereal smell. taste offers a little more, hints of fruit and kinda grassy, no hops bitterness at all, not great but not the worst thing out there.

Appearance: clear orange and copper under an off-white head with lingering bubbles of all size. Wisps of bubbly lace. Swirls average.
Nose: dry biscuit malt. Lemon peel. Maybe some apple skins…maybe not.
Palate: crisp profile. Biscuit then lemon and feathery wisps of caramel. Caramel apple essence in the finish. Tastes a wee smidge more than it smells. Apple crackers. Starts to grow a hard bitter rind finish which nips almost painfully at back of throat. Hint of diacetyl.
Final Thoughts: plainly boring, and according to my beloved British beer critic who has drunk many Bass Pale Ales over the years, a poor pale shadow of its former glory.
