4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 KickInChalice (771) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 13, 2012
From notes. First reviewed 12/4/2011. Served on tap in a pint glass at Bastone.
My pour is a nice full mahogany color that is properly dark and opaque all the way through. A glimmer of ruby exists at the edge of the glass. A medium sized very creamy tan head gives this stout a noble appearance.
The coffee is very strong in the nose. An inviting aroma of premium coffee is backed by dark roasted malt and some bitter chocolate.
The flavor of bold, rich coffee comes through right away, supported by a deep roasted malt. Some dark bitter chocolate gains a little vanilla and creamy sweetness toward the end. The bitterness from the beginning stays constant throughout the sip and lasts a bit into the aftertaste.
Rich, creamy carbonation creates a very smooth feel that is noticeable right away. The body is full and robust and really contributes to a enjoyable drinking experience.
I was surprised by just how good this beer was, start to finish. There are not that many beers I will keep going back for, but this is one of them. Hopefully their other beers are this good.

draft... smells like coffee, a bit green vegetal but the coffee is decent, the taste is a bit too one sided, needs something to break up the coffee, a bit thin but worth trying

MBG Winterfest 2010. Poured black color with an average to large frothy brown head that was mostly lasting and produced good lacing. Moderate to heavy roast dark coffee aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium roasted bitter flavor with a Medium roasted bitter finish of moderate duration. Good beer.
