On gravity at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol April 2013. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Toasted, slightly bready malts, berry fruits and a hint of pine, before a dryish finish. Ok.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading] Deep ruby with a negligible head. Chocolate & a little soot at first. Some blackberry. Quite sweet - possibly too much so, and the mouthfeel is a bit sticky. A little grape, wee wee and melon eventually ambles in, but the hops are pretty muted. Itís OK, but it lacks any real punch and is pretty forgettable. On the plus side, itís a beer brewed at Batemans that isnít completely cack.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask at the William Stead (JDW), Darlington. Medium off white head. Mahogany body. Citric hops, raspberries, oak, black malt, roastiness, oranges, strawberries, banana, blackcurrant. Bittersweet, with some tanginess and some sourness. Dry finish. Good. Almost more of an Old Ale than a Black IPA though.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
The Felix Holt, Nuneaton, 13/04/13. Tan capped ruby. Earthy stems, greenhouse, filter coffee and strawberry creams nose. Good punchy bitterness and coffee underscored with berries and tropical, mango-like hop. Bit thin in the mouth but good. Almond-like boozy touches. Pretty stunned this was brewed at Batemanís.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tasted this in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW) in April 2013. Cask, handpump dispense. Crystal clear dark ruby in colour with a thin creamy buff head. Slight sulphur note in the short yeasty bread aroma. Thin but resiny mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give an interesting array of flavours with sweet fruity maltloaf, syrupy cherries, barley sugar. Slight citrus notes present in the hops but really short lived. Finish is rather vinous and slightly dry with dates, blood orange and port. Full sweetness rolls in the mouth at the end and not what I was expecting from an IPA. Really enjoyed this quirky ale, highly recommended.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
(on cask at Wetherspoons, Birmingham Airport) Pours a clear, dark brown with little, off-white head that recedes rather quickly. Aroma is slightly herbal hoppy with some sodapop hints. Medium to light body, soft carbonation, oily texture and a short, slightly bitter finish. Flavour follows the nose basically.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at the George, Croydon. It pours very dark brown with a small bubbly beige head. The nose is roasted malt, burnt earth, dark chocolate, liquorice and pine. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, pine, coffee grinds, dark chocolate, earth, varnish, good level of bitterness, faint tang and salted liquorice with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. A pretty tasty hoppy stout.
