Cask: Special - Wetherspoon 2013 Spring Festival
Brewed by Kelly Ryan of Good George at Batemans.

This black IPA is deep mahogany in colour, with a citrus, grapefruit peel & pine aroma, leading to a treasure chest of hop flavours, underlying dark chocolate and hints of coffee, with a bold, bitter finish.

Cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 12 April 2013. Poured a clear, deep ruby colour with a dense off white head. Aroma of toasted malt, bread and caramel. Grapefruit and citrus hop flavours with some with some fruit cake and brown sugar. Finish was dry grain, dried fruit and mild spice.

Cask (handpump) at the Sir John Oldcastle (JD Wetherspoon) on 13 April 2013. Dark brown. Smooth with chocolate malt and caramel. Also licorice on the palate. A bit sweet. Some tart hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste. Becomes quite astringent. Smooth mouthfeel though. Interesting but not entirely to my taste.

Two Cask Pints at Wibbas Down (JDW), Wimbledon, London in Apr 2013 during Spoons Festival - Black in colour with Reddish tinge. Malty; roasty malts, lots of liquorice, coffee, caramel, chocolate. Hoppy; piney resinous hops. Fruity; grapefruit citrus, raisins, dried fruit. Very good malt/hop/fruit balance. Sweet roasty (burnt) malty balanced by bitter citrus hops. Dry bitter finish. Enjoyed this. Nice Black IPA!

On gravity at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol April 2013. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Toasted, slightly bready malts, berry fruits and a hint of pine, before a dryish finish. Ok.

[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading] Deep ruby with a negligible head. Chocolate & a little soot at first. Some blackberry. Quite sweet - possibly too much so, and the mouthfeel is a bit sticky. A little grape, wee wee and melon eventually ambles in, but the hops are pretty muted. Itís OK, but it lacks any real punch and is pretty forgettable. On the plus side, itís a beer brewed at Batemans that isnít completely cack.

Cask at the William Stead (JDW), Darlington. Medium off white head. Mahogany body. Citric hops, raspberries, oak, black malt, roastiness, oranges, strawberries, banana, blackcurrant. Bittersweet, with some tanginess and some sourness. Dry finish. Good. Almost more of an Old Ale than a Black IPA though.

The Felix Holt, Nuneaton, 13/04/13. Tan capped ruby. Earthy stems, greenhouse, filter coffee and strawberry creams nose. Good punchy bitterness and coffee underscored with berries and tropical, mango-like hop. Bit thin in the mouth but good. Almond-like boozy touches. Pretty stunned this was brewed at Batemanís.
