Premium bitter with black pepper.
An unmistakable aroma tickles the nose. A subtle tingle of crushed pepper with bellowing heat. A clean and beautifully balanced beer.

Well bodied, tasty, great colour. Has a fizz to it which suggests the pepper. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from B&M, Rochdale. Deep amber-red with no head. Tried the first half without the pepper. Like many premium ales it has a light berry sweetness in both its aroma and taste. Adding the small sachet of pepper that came with it felt like the 80’s when I had to add the salt to the salt and shake crisps in my lunchbox - certainly a novelty for a beer! With the pepper added (and wasn’t quite sure whether to stir it or not), there wasn’t a huge amount of difference (nor was there a huge amount of pepper in reality), and it didn’t make a lot of difference.

Ive mislaid the sachet of black pepper!, it does smell of pepper anyway, nice dark red body with a foamy white head, flavour of caramel with black pepper, its alright actually, very smooth. bit annoyed of lost the sachet as i dont happen to have any pepper.

Bottled 05/07/14. The sachet of black pepper was missing so I ground my own in. This then becomes a malty beer with delicious black pepper. Freshly milled black pepper is gorgeous of course but I don;t drink it and it really was the dominsnt thing here - the beer itself being fairly bland. I guess it’s a good idea to use pepper but it should be a subtle addition not the main event.

Bottle from Hinckley B&M. Was getting a bit excited about this thinking it wouldn’t taste of Bateman’s. But it does. Irredeemably, ineffably Batemans. With some pepper and twigs stirred in. Tedious house aniseed and Dolly Mixtures. Smell of marzipan, sticky Germanic muscavado and malt loaf malt, Chocolate Eclairs (the sweets). Ruby fringed briefly with white. Pepper’s pretty good.

Bottle from B&M. Deep amber body with a thin whiteish head. Nose is malt, hint of sulphur and eggs, black pepper, some red fruit, some oak, alcohol, candied fruit. Bittersweet with a little fire and some sourness. Dry finish. Decent standard British bitter.

Bottle from B&M. Pours deep copper with a cream froth. Plenty of black pepper notes both in the aroma and taste. There are notes of biscuit malt, some citrus, spice and something a little metallic. Fair play to Bateman’s for trying to make something a little different. unfortunately this one just doesn’t taste all the great. Not terrible either though.
