3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. The Batemans website makes it clear that this beer was revived for the 2010 Football World Cup, and on England’s demise was rebadged as ’We’ve Blown It!’, under which name I sampled it. It appears alternative pumpclips were distributed. Amber with a small white head. Sweet aroma. Pleasant taste balancing fruity hints with biscuity grain and a mid bitter finish.

1.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
[Cask at the Three Guineas, Reading] Deep amber (darker than you’d expect for a summer football beer) with a moderate white head. Caramel by the bucketload, plus autumn leaves, cough mixture, chocolate and gravy in the rather sweet flavour. Some old, muddy hop bitterness does creep through in the syrupy finish. At least this isn’t as bland as Bateman’s normal efforts, but it’s a sticky, ghastly mess instead. England Expects better than this...

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Cask at the Earl of Beaconsfield, Cambridge, as England Expects in South Africa. A simple bitter (as befits the average World Cup follower); amber with a dense white head; syrupy caramel malt flavour, and a rather musty hop finish. Come on Inger-land, you can do better than this.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask at the City Arms, Manchester (August 07). Medium dark reddish brown colour with a fine, tan head. Lovely to look at. Aroma of caramel, dark fruits, raisins. Rich amber malt flavor with fruits galore. Good hops, too. Excellent balance. Very rich, with medium body. A bit sweet, caramel / toffee with fruit. Dry fruit and hop finish. Good stuff.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask conditioned at a Spoons. Amber to gold with white head. Heavy sweet beer with doses of caramel. Drank a few watching the first half of Englands victory over the French in the rugby World Cup, Allez les Blancs, but had to suffer the Spoons service at the same time. Moved on, the beer wasn’t up to it nor was the pub. Decidedly average, unlike the Rugby.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask at JDW. Penny Black, Bicester 22-09-07 Poured dark golden, with tight white head. Some light hoppy notes but quite weak aroma, tasted quite sweet heavily leaning towards vanilla with sweet malts. Not bad as, one trick ponies go.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Cask conditioned @ Humble Plumb, Soton. Miniscule pumpclip in shape of a cricket bat. Coppery orange. Malty with hints of caramel and mild fruity hops. Whilst there is some hop presence in the nose they are oddly lacking in the mouth leaving the malts flat, boring and unbalanced.
